I saw the movie "Contagion" last week and through out the movie I kept refering or thinking of the character Matt Damon plays as....well, Matt Damon.

I also saw inception again for the 6th time and I was still thinking on the topic when I realized I continued to refer to Domm Cobb as Leanardo Dicapprio

So Escapists do you do the same? Or do you call a character by their in-movie name?

I generally refer to the actors' names rather than their characters. I just find it easier for some reason.

Only when the actor is pretty much the same person in whatever movie or cartoon he is in. Or when the name is utterly forgettable. Such as the case with the exception cowboy beebop anyone who has steve blum's voice is instantly remembered as steve blum.

Nah, because I only know the names of approximately 3 different actors. I usually give movie characters names along the lines of "That guy with the funny hair", or if someone was particularly memorable, "What's-'is-face?" (this pisses my friends off greatly when we're trying to talk about films).

I tend to refer to characters as the character played by the actor, unless I'm talking about the movie with someone who has seen the movie. For example, if someone had seen 'The Departed' I'd say "Billy Costigan" or "Frank Costello" , if someone hadn't seen the movie I'd say "Decaprio's Charcter" or Nicholson's character".

And if I completely blank on the actor or character name, I'll just say 'the guy with the thing' or, provided I can remember something they were in 'the_ guy/lady'.

It usually depends on how well they play the character, the significance of the role, if they're just playing themselves, or if the character or movie is even remotely memorable. Like, I don't remember half the names of characters played by Nicholas Cage, but I know it's Nick Cage.

So, yeah, it's largely context sensitive. If the character or movie doesn't matter at all or is totally forgettable, I'm only going to be able to think of the actor and not the character.

Also, of course, if I'm commenting on the performance given by the actor I'm going to refer to the actor. If I'm discussing the story, I'll probably refer to the character.

I'm pretty horrible with names, if anything I tend to call actors by their characters more often.

There are a few actors that pretty much play themselves though. Christopher Walken, Ice Cube, Sam Jackson, and Nick Cage in particular.

It depends on whether I can remember the character's name (or the actors name for that matter)

For EG I always call Captain Jack Sparrow Jack Sparrow. While William Turner and Elisabeth Swan get to be Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly

On the flip side of that I always call Commodore Norrington Norrington because I can never remember Jack Davenport's name
The Lord of the Rings cast gets called by their character's names
So does the Toy Story cast

I call Saoirse Ronan Hanna no matter what movie I'm talking about

There are lots of movies with great characters that don't emphasize their names enough to stick.

I don't remember Geoffrey Rush's character from The King's Speech, or Kevin Spacey's character from any movie he was ever in, but he consistently acts some of the best characters in movies.

It's a shame about that

When the movie is bad at characterization and the actor is type-casted, yes.

I normally say "the character" in the common event that I can't remember the character's name.
