Being from London, I use the brand name for all drinks, but if talking about all these types of drinks collectively (coke, fanta and the likes) I say soft drinks.

I call it by ITS NAME. If its Mountain Dew, I call it Mountain Dew. If its Coca Cola, i call it Cola.

Here in the South, we call it "Coke."

Obviously if we want to specify, we call the carbonated beverage by its particular name. But if I'm going to get a drink and I want to see what anyone else wants, I say "I'm going to get a Coke, you want anything?" And then I'll return with a Sprite, Mountain Dew, etc.

I've been in restuarants were I literally had to go through a list for any one to know what I was talking about. For example, I once tried ordering Pepsi, Coke, Sprite, Mt Dew, Cola, Pop, Soda, Can, and finally, exsaperated, asked for an RC and was thusly served.

So I call it what the locals call it. . . until they make fun of me for being a yankee. Then I call the fucker a pop and they will deal with it.

Off topic:

RC Cola is the best fizzy concoction I have ever tasted. You should try it some time.

I just say the brand. If I'm making a generalisation, then 'soft drink', but I barely ever say that.

"Soda" and "pop" both sound retarded. I call it soft drink, or just "a drink." Or a descriptive name (Coke, lemonade, etc)

Unless I'm differentiating between any other soft drinks, i casually refer to it(being any general soft drink) as (or a) coke.
