Trying to find out who or what the g-man is one of the reasons everyone wants episode 3 so badly:

At the end of Episode 2 Eli Vance also confides in you that the g-man visits/affects/haunts/uses him as well. This is the first time in the series anyone even recognizes his existance beyond the player (to my knowledge). Then Eli get's killed and it's a huge cliffhanger and... Episode 3 doesn't come out.

Yes, I care about the story in all the games I play.
If there's no reason to be invested in the things I'm doing I don't do them.
I'm the same way in real life.

The story is purely secondary to the gameplay/action in my book. I generally don't play shooters for innovative storylines or anything complex in that department, but a unique story is appreciated.

Actually, the big bad does quote from the G-man: "Your contract was open to the highest bidder", which probally shadows a bit of knowledge from him aswell about the G-man.

Dr. Breen also mentions that Gordon's contract was open to the highest bidder, even though Gordon's contract already belongs to G-man. These are mysteries that will live in infamy I guess.

Sto... what? I just shoot dudes.

No, actually story i one thing that sets HL aside from other "copy paste" shooters like Halo.
But Halo has the best story of all FPS's! Did you mean COD maybe? I hope not because I like COD too.

On topic: The storyline of HL2 is quite good. G Man may be mysterious, but he is also interesting. You can't hate on an interesting character.

Clearly you two surpass me in Half Life knowledge :D
Interesting stuff. I wonder if Valve has an idea behind the scenes of how all this is working together, or if they just kind of whipped it all up because it was interesting.

Don't care. I did long ago, but the it's just an fps after you don't care about the gravity gun anymore. My friends kept trying to force me to play it, but I just wasn't having fun anymore.

I do think it's a bit cheap of them to tease portions of story behind the scenes while never giving any sort of cohesive whole. Something tells me they don't ever plan on really revealing who the G-man is.

I will say that I at least like the game's characters and atmosphere; the moment-to-moment stuff.

I get very annoyed with the Half Life 2 plot, in that it seems to want to have one but it's not allowed to let you see it. It's a linear progression of visiting different people and being told I have to follow another linear progression to the next one. Whenever I find someone new I want there to be a "Punch them until they tell you why you've just had to travel out through zombie country on your own to find them and why you then have to follow what they say which will undoubtedly be go through zombie country on your own to find someone else." button. Honestly, it'd be right next to the button saying "You're a trained soldier, how about YOU go shoot down the gunship, since it's your job and all."

I absolutely love the story of Half-Life and the G-Man is one of the best things in that game. I hope we'll never really know who or what he exactly is and why he does what he does. Because that's one thing that keeps me interested in him. He's this mysterious being that you try to grasp but whenever you get close to him he escapes you. It's the mystery around him that makes him so interesting. As soon as they would just flat out explain everything about him, I'd lose interest in him, so I hope that they'll just leave hints about what he might be and it's up to the player to interpret those hints.

And if you want to get more of the story, you have to pay attention to the surroundings for example. Valve tell a lot of the story through the environment Half-Life. You have to think on your own and draw the conclusions yourself of what has happened and what it might mean. Sure you can just listen to the basic story but there is much more in that game.

Half Lifes story is great because it wasn't shoved in your face you really had to look for it. I like this in comparison to these otherwise great shooters shoving a mediocre unskippable story in your face that just have awful story and drama driven.

Like Dom in Gears of War 2, oh my god, if there was one thing I could cut out of that game it'd be his whiny ass.

Not really. Especially not after a cliffhanger going on 5 years.

And it's all basically still a bunch of mysteries that are still unexplained.

Good writing, though.

Not one bit. Perhaps if I was interacting with it as something other than a mute floating camera that people vaguely talked at, sure, but with the way it is now? Nope.

I think I like it because I don't expect it to answer all my questions. I love mystery and I personally like it when my mind goes wild with all the possibilities of what's going on and trying to make sense of it all. I hope they never explain the GMan, either. Would be weird if they explicitly stated in some set piece who he was. He's almost some kind of Entity like something out of a Arthur C Clarke novel that transcends time and space, using his abilities as some kind of Cosmological Security Consultant- dealing with 'situations' with assets of his own, bringing them around when needed. Takes no sides and yet sees everything at once due to time not being linear to his perception.

The rest of the story, with trans-dimensional beings compelled by unseen forces and an unknown, supposed galactic empire and how they go about colonizing systems is fascinating in Valves limited exposition style of storytelling that does wonders for immersion. Only in Half-Life 2 has there actually been more of a direction to the story, especially in Episode 2, but on the whole I really have no expectations for closure from the Half Life saga anytime soon- which is the way most things in life are.

I've never thought the story was amazing, but it is decent. It is annoying that Episode 2 ending on such a cliffhanger all those years ago. I'm pretty sure not even Valve know how to handle the story to be honest. (IE - who the duck is the G-Man? I don't think even Valve know.)
