Only in multiplayer, and only for basic materials. If I'm a hundred blocks in the air and run out of wood, I'm not going to spend a good half hour collecting it. But I will search for rarer stuff. Except lapis. That stuff is to stupidly rare and required for my giant pixel art.

Yes it is cheating. Minecraft, for some reason, isn't a building game anymore, but a survivalist "simulator". It's a bit schizophrenic like that.

But spelunking and clunky combat really isn't my cup of tea, and resource gathering was pure work, not play; so I stopped playing - until I found the Too Many Items mod. I have since built two more large (if unimaginative) structures and working on a HUGE third one. TMI FTW! It saved the game for me.

So yeah. It's either easy cheating (InvEdit is hard) or not playing. Guess which one I picked?

Aaah, this is rare. Seems you are one of the 2 on this site that haven't played Minecraft. You are missing out a LOT, seriously, buy this game, I only promote it because i love it that much.

Also, i have cheated in minecraft to play around with tnt, and i fixed up the game speed at one point, other than that i build and mine some more

I hate the monsters, so I play on peaceful. I also do not just give myself stuff, but I am building a stone castle, so waiting around for the furnaces to spit out one brick at a time is annoying... So I use an inventory editor to change all my cobblestone to stone. That is all the "cheating" I do though...

Minecraft is a sandbox game, at heart. You can do whatever you want provided you're not griefing some shmuck on a multiplayer server.
I don't consider things like inv edit to be cheating.
That said I don't do it myself - I like having to force myself into deep scary caves. But should that ever become tiresome and I want to just get on and build stuff, I wouldn't have any moral dilemma in switching over to a system like invedit.

Well, mining and resource gathering is meant to be a part of the game.

However- it comes to a point where the novelty of that has well and truly worn off - and you're more in the realm of building fantastic and epic things, where taking the time to mine and collect resources is simply time-consuming and more in the way than any part of the creative process.

When me and my girlfriend first started, we were having a whale of a time collecting and mining resources in order to start up and survive. Now we have a kind of palace-home built suspended between cliffs and looking to expand to make the WHOLE mountain we're based on completely habitable and made into an even bigger palace - to which we'd be privy to call the surrounding area our 'kingdom'. We don't have time to gather every bit of stone, sand, wood and such or process the raw materials into desired materials - so we'd take a few shortcuts here and there.

We have as much fun building, and I think when we finally complete the whole thing, we might revert to playing minecraft as it has been designed to be played - possibly starting with replanting all the trees we'd cut down in our manic bid to collect wood.

Only when I decide to go nuts building stuff, like kilometres of minecart track, or a redstone circuit with a few hundred logic gates.

Note to self: stop building the minecart track and get back to work on the synthesiser.

only problem I have is when people use x-ray on multiplayer servers to give themselves an unfair advantage
I know a moderator of server who uses Xray to catch people using xray. At least that's what he tells me.

Then again, if he wanted to build something huge, I'm sure he could just 'give' them to himself since he's opped.

I'm with you on that (also now expecting similiar comments too)
Yay, that makes 3. It's kind of like when you try to find someone that didn't like Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, you just don't find them too often.

ZOMG!!!

but seriously im curious to know *why* you dont play minecraft?

i really am being serious
The little I've seen of it, it's in first person, and I hate First Person games. And second, also the little I've seen and heard about it, it really doesn't look nor sound interesting, at all.

I'll pass and there is at least one more person that doesn't play nor care to. Con Carne (I can't tag his name right thanks to the space)

The closest thing I do to "cheating" is sometimes I'll turn the difficulty to "Peaceful" when I'm working on a larger project. Otherwise, everything I've built and created has been totally through finding the materials in-game. I was lucky and the place I initially spawned was right next to a series of large hills so after punching some trees and stone and grabbing some initial tools, I carved a small hole on the side of a steep cliff to climb and hunkered down for the first night, just me, a wooden door and my crafting block. Good times.

As it stands, after building my workshop, mine system and steadily building that hill into a fortress, I have more building materials than I know use for them. Honestly, I never really needed to "cheat".

Well the server I play on has an item shop; you can sell your unwanted items (like the metric fucktons of sand I gathered while widening out a bay) and buy the things you need. I guess that counts, but you still have to work for it so it ain't a free lunch.

And honestly, I don't really like working on big projects without it. Fact is, I don't like tons of grinding. I'm building a submarine now and making that bay larger was work enough. Gathering the neccesary amounts of cobblestone and coal to smelt it all to stone is just too boring.

I have done it many times. I am currently using a save that I started off cheating with some diamond tools (just because I hate fucking with continually making new stone tools) and finally moved towards not giving myself items.

I totally don't give a shit that I cheat and I am definitely not bothered if others are upset about it, fuck 'em.

Since Minecraft allows mods, using a mod is not cheating. On my server though, we play by house rules about player roles because there's a little bit of roleplay.

Depends why you play minecraft. If you enjoy the creative building, I don't see why you should be forced to grind for several days straight to get the materials. However if you enjoy building your mine and killing zombies then no one is going to put you down for it.
If just for that, creative is the option.
Creative is really outdated and you can't play around with your creation afterwards. In singleplayer it's not like you are cheating anyone else.
