Calling it a shooter is a SERIOUS technicality. Such a technicality as to render the term meaningless. The aiming and shooting is not actually a task of trying to shoot something, it is the simplest way to let the player place a Portal. The entirety of the spectrum of skills and action that you take in Portal are completely different from a Shooter. I will argue that World of Warcraft, Zuma, and Missile Command are more Shooter then Portal.

I don't know why people seem to think that Portal needs some odd, niche characteristic to reflect it's genre. Braid isn't a 3rd person Oil-painting-Platformer. Bejeweled isn't a 3rd person Gem based Puzzle game. Tetris isn't a 3rd person vertical downward movement based Puzzle game. Portal is a Puzzle game and a Platform game. The fact that it is 1st person and uses a "Gun" to place the puzzle pieces doesn't change the Genre, it makes up the mechanics of the game.

It's a first person puzzle game. And I am serious, that's what it is. It's not that hard to figure it out.

You're both wrong....and right. It's technically (and officially) a first-person puzzler. Which means, it's a puzzle game played via the first-person perspective.

I guess you can call it that. Me. I would call it a first person puzzle shooter. If such a genre exist.

OK, A) None of matters, but B) It's both. It's an FPS and a puzzle game. What's so hard about that? Why does it have to be one or the other?

Well if pressed then yeah I'd probably classify it as an FPS, but it's a game like Shadow of the Colossus, or Killer7, it defies genre. You can't really just put it in one specific genre, but the base of it is definitly that of an FPS.

Well, kinda but I would classify it as more of a puzzle/platformer.
this.

I think it's slotting into a new genre that it, and Mirrors edge, fit into. First Person Puzzle Platformer.

I say it is definitely a more puzzle based game. However, you do shoot portals out of a gun, so it lies in the crossroads of both.

Yes it is. FPS = First Portal Shooter... right? heh.

But seriously, no. Portal is a 3D, First-person Action/Puzzle game using an FPS engine. It incorporates FPS elements (i.e. a "gun", first-person perspective, etc.). In that sense, Portal is an FPS in the same way Fallout 3 or Resident Evil 4 are RPG's.

Then again, genres are so ill-defined and crossover-happy that the whole concept of categorizing them is downright silly anymore (beyond 2D/3D and First-Person/Third-Person).

Well it is first person and you do shoot something, so technically it is an FPS. Whether this label is a fitting classification or not is another matter. I would say it is a first person puzzle game.

I'd say no, because you don't really shoot things. Also FOR THE LOVE OF FUCKING GOD AND ALL THAT IS RIGHT WITH HUMANITY, STOP... SAYING... A... FPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's an FPS. ---->AN<---- !!!!!!!!!!!! Eff-pee-ess. That's a VOWEL sound. Unless for some extremely strange reason you pronounce it Feps or something, it should be AN FPS.

Why am I going so bat shit fucking berry human horseshit to the face crazy panda cakes about this? Because SO MANY PEOPLE DO IT. WHY?!?!?!? Do you say I like a orange for breakfast? DO YOU?!?! WHY CAN YOU TYPE THINGS?! SCURVY!!!!!!!!!

Not a bad poll by the way. It is hard to classify I suppose. I'm still going with no on it though, as you really don't "shoot" shoot anything. You make stuff tip over though. FPT (First person tipper).
