First-person is not directly linked with shooters alone. The camera only alters the perspective. It's a puzzle game, with some shooting and platforming elements...and a first person view.

Well, you shoot portals, but I consider it to be a first person puzzle game. And it took me 12 years to realize that Pokemon Snap was a rail shooter with a camera and apples instead of a shotgun and hand grenades...

I'd say it's a FPS (since that's all Valve seems to know how to make, just gussied up some to keep them from being the usual Modern Halo Duty type FPS).

Well Metroid Prime is an FPA (first person adventure) and that has waaay more shooting than portal so I classify portal as an FPA.
Metroid Prime was just a dumbed down FPS, My First First Person Shooter if you will. Calling it a First Person Adventure game is just a way for people who claim to hate FPS game (usually Nintendo fanboys) to be able to admit they like the Prime games.

It's really based on your own personal opinion. The genre's we try to classify games with these days are terrible. RPG for example; you play a role in every game, so why does any particular genre get to claim that title? As for this debate, either side could be right. Portal is a puzzle game, but at the same time you could call it a first person shooter if you were to classify the portal gun as an actual gun (after all, technically it shoots something... Just not bullets). Furthermore, not every game with a first person view is an FPS, god of war III had a first person segment but I think we can all agree it wasn't an FPS. I'd call it a puzzle game personally, just because I can't mentally put it in the same envelope as, say, Call of Duty. Like I said though, it's a matter of opinion.

It shouldn't really matter, genres are over-used anyhow.

Portal was, and still is, a fun game first and foremost and I hope Portal 2 is the same.

I would say it's more a first person platformer/puzzler than shooter. Shooter tends to denote shooting enemies with a gun, where as in portal, you merely place portals with the mouse.

I voted "Does it matter?" Mainly because it's probably an FPS Puzzle game. It's a completely unique genre.
