simple question. as for myself, i'm not really sure, because nerd are smart people, and i'm not really that smart (even though lots of my classmates in school think so). all i do is play games. is knowing a lot about games considered nerdy?

Call me a nerd or a geek, whatever doesn't matter. I'm damn proud of it and I dont give a crap what others think of me, I enjoy being a nerd.

Considering that I indulge in everything from gaming to comic books to actually making an AMV, yes. Yes, I would consider myself one. However, I don't let my nerd-hood get out of control. I have other hobbies on top of my nerdy ones. Martial arts, wrestling, making music, and my favorite, gettin' with the ladies.

I'm not a "shut in, no life" nerd, and nerd doesn't really come first when describing me. I'm me, and part of me is being a nerd. A pretty big nerd, but also a reasonable one (and hot).

Also I feel I could probably beat up anyone calling me a nerd short of a college-level linebacker or an MMA expert. And usually they'd like me anyways (because I have a friend who happens to be a college-level linebacker).

Intellect doesn't have too much to do with nerdery... at least I don't think it does.
I've always claimed my nerd status with pride. A Nerd is a guy who plays Risk with his friends till 5 AM on New Years. Or starts shouting out random army-talk gibberish at paintball. Or learned to write in Dwarvish runes after reading LOTR. Or speaks in 1920's slang for the heck of it. Or beats a video game the day it comes out. etc. etc.

Basically, if your generally socially awkward, unacceptable or outcast but really don't care? You're a nerd.

Oh, but don't pretend to not care, and then work really hard to fit in. I hate that. You can't have your nerd cake and eat it too.

Oh, by the way? Socially unacceptable doesn't mean antisocial or unpopular, sometimes it just means that it took tremendous confidence to get away with it.

I'm a nerd and damn proud of it. It's a lot less gay (no offense meant to homosexuals) than sports. Rubbing against other sweaty men, tackling them and having a nice group shower. Masculine.

I fucking hate that phrase. It should be 'You can't eat your cake and have it.' If you have a cake, of course you're going to eat it.

Sorry for the derail.

If I had to categorize myself, I guess I'd say so. Not that I'm ashamed of it, though. Being a nerd is great.

I'm pretty sure there was a thread like this a while back, but that being said, I consider myself to have nerdish tendencies rather than being a full-blown nerd.

Considering that I study physics in my own time, for fun and not to further my career: yes, yes I think I am a nerd. Didn't you heard? Nerds are the new jocks.. Apart from the popularity, excelling at sports and being incredibly stupid.

Here's nerdy for you...

Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert had the theory that eventually , women will stop craving muscular boneheads, and start going for pasty white nerdy IT techs and engineers, because of the 'survival of the fittest' rule.

Sure, if you want a sabre toothed tiger slain, someone like Steve Austin might be useful for protecting you and your spawn, but, in the future, when its technical knowledge keeping the house running and providing for your family, we'll all get to laugh at the jocks who chased a ball and were more popular thru school...

ME? bitter? :D

The mere fact I'm looking to the creator of Dilbert for my evidence makes me nerd, without the Cthulhu roleplaying in my youth, the array of consoles and computers from the atari 2600, thru to now, and the obsession with comedy, not 'I like funny stuff' but obsession.

Huge nerd, love it. Better than a dumbass jock.

Love the fact that there is only a couple of hundred spaces in professional sports yet thousands who want that job.
Compare that to someone who can type at a reasonable pace...

Life could be worse, what's one more label. :)
