Can you respect genres that aren't necessarily your favorite? And find the good qualities that other people love? Or do you just ignore what others say and defend your favorite genre, with the amount of passion that would shame the pope?

Also: My favorite is JRPG, and yea I defend my least favorite genre FPS, when I see that there is some value to it.

I've defended the racing genre quite a few times. And I really, really don't like racing games. Save for the occasional cart-racer, but thats about all I can stand.

And I don't have a favorite genre. Since most have plenty of games that could also be considered other genre's, the whole thing is convoluted and confusing to me.

I've also defended many casual games, despite my massive "don't give a damn" attitude towards them.

It depends. If someone's making a legitimate criticism of a game/genre, even if I do like it, I'll accept it. If someone's being dumb about a game, unfairly stereotyping, or trying to make a point that doesn't work, I'll defend the genre, even if it's one I don't like.

I guess I'll note that my favorite genres are beat 'em up, action RPGs, and JRPGs, and my least favorite genre is probably RTS. But I really don't have any genres I don't like, just games I don't like. Most of which fall under the RTS umbrella, but there are games I don't like in every genre.

I'll defend anything if it means I get to smash some idiots incorrect views.
I've defended things I hated before just because people were insulting it for the wrong reasons.

That depends on if they're defenisble. For instance I can recognise the appeal in sports games, but I question the intelligence of fans who will buy a slightly upgraded version each year - they're always dead cheap in the used games bin so evidently nobody sees really long term value from them.

This. Sports games suck

I see between the lines of genre. I use genre simply as a way of knowing what to expect as far as gameplay goes. that's it.

I will Defend a good game, regardless of genre. As someone else said above, i'll defend a bad game when the person who is bashing it is doing so in an ignorant manner. I like telling stupid people they are stupid. It makes me happy.

i love almost every genre of game except the music and dance stuff simply because if i want to dance to music i'll dance to music i don't need a game for that and if i want to play guitar I want to play a "real" guitar not a plastic one that looks like it was made by fruckin nurf!

I don't know if I would go out of my way to defend them but live and let live. I only really like arcade driving games but if people want to play realistic driving games then I don't really have a problem if some are too realistic for me and I don't want to play them.

Sure. Because just like in film and music, there is always good to come out of every single genre. Even sports games (Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 is one of the best games of all time).

It really depends upon the game, but in general, no. My favourite genre is RPG, and my least favourite is probably fighting games.

basically sums up what i was gonna say, if someone is blatantly trolling and hating on a game/genre with no reasons as to why really, then i will defend it and straight up own them right back. but if they have some good reasons and are willing to understand that its a good genre for alot of other people, i have no quarrels then.

my favorite is by far rpg's and third person shooters (preferrably tactical), but ill defend rts's and fps's when the need arises (doesn't happen very often as most people are hardcore about those two, so no need to defend it alot)

Only really if the genre is actually well developed and has some uniqueness to it but other than that only if i enjoyed the game itself.

I don't really dislike any genres but I'll only defend it if the game in question is good.

Also, my favorite genre is WRPG.

I find the whole categorizing of games as genres thing kinda stupid. There are no good and bad genres, there are good and bad games.
Now, do I defend games I don't like? Well many people defend games they like but they are not good at, (like racing games). Given my competitive nature I try getting good at a game I am not originally good at (everyone was a noob once dont you forget that), and most of the times I will enjoy a game even if I lose.
