I like having less complication. I want an automatic, but I have a standard right now.

Don't count on it with internal combustion engines. Electrics are pretty much the wave of the future, be they powered by hydrogen or batteries... and a well-designed electric doesn't need variable gears at all. A 1:1 where more RPMs=more speed is more than sufficient in most cases.
mass usage of electric cars is still quite far off don't kid yourself batteries don't work yet and hydrogen cars are way too expensive and polluting to run and just unsafe in the hands of the public
both things will be fixed, eventually i predict 10-15 years, but we'll see

but yes, it will solve the gear problem when it happens we'll be stuck with internal combustion for some time yet, possibly the best comprimise will be gas turbine electric cars

but they're going to be expensive for now.

I drive an automatic, but I know how to drive a manual. The reason I drive an automatic though is because I live in California and driving a manual in traffic on the 405 or the 5 freeway is an easy one way ticket to either road rage and therapy.

If I ever move somewhere a little more open with a lot less traffic I'll buy a car with a manual transmission. Driving a manual just makes me feel more connected to a car.

In the UK pretty much everyone drives manual, automatic is a little weird here. I do have one friend who drives an auto (handed down from his brother) and he's not a fan of it
I love driving manual but would like to try an automatic just to compare

Having learned in a manual and now being insured on a manual, it's definitely manual for me. I've driven an auto once on a relatively straight and flat road with no need to stop beyond changing driver, so I'm still not entirely sure how autos work; the apparent lack of a clutch perplexes me slightly..

I drive manual, but I find it really annoying ever since I tried automatic. Sucks that it isn´t nearly as widely spread here in Belgium.

My car is an automatic, my moms is an automatic, and my dads truck is a manual, 3/4 ton diesel. I can drive the truck just fine, but I don't know if I could drive, say, a 4 cylinder manual because the clutch in the truck is veeeery forgiving, whereas I've been told that the smaller motors have more picky clutches because of the higher RPMs. I always am told that I probably couldnt drive a car stick, but I've never tried.

Manual for me. Well used to be before i switched from car to motorcycle. Manual simply offers more control really. With automatic it always feels like you cant control how fast you are going, i mean when you keep on the gas you shift up automatically, with manual you just hit the gearlimit and cant go faster until you shift up into the next gear :3

Of course that usually presents a Problem for People who have learned automatic or simply are more used to automatic by that point.

I drive manual.
Because I am British.
All British people drive a car the correct way, with a manual gearbox.
Fact.

Automatics are sluggish and use too much petrol. Always go manual, so much more responsive (and fun on country roads). Rent out a speedy manual car for a weekend and find out what you're missing (wages permitting).

I drive a five speed Corolla. And I love it. Something about driving a stick shift is just damn fun. I hate driving automatics now. It just feels like the fun is missing.

I drive a manual just because I haven't tried anything else. Almost 19 so I've only been driving for a year and I haven't been driving a lot sooo...

I like manuals though. I've tried automatics, they're just a bit...well...I fall asleep while driving because I'm not doing anything. Gear sticks are just part of driving for me, like riding a bike.

Manual. Jetta TDi. Fantastic car with great gas mileage. Learn how to drive a manual and you'll probably never go back.

Hear Hear! National penis waving for the win!

Yes I too am British and I think I've only been in one auto car in my life, which was as a passenger. I couldn't imagine not driving a manual. If you think driving a 5 speed manual is hard, try a 3 over 3 with a splitter (It gives you 12 gears essentially). Fun as hell but real easy to fuck up when your just learning. Combine that with 14 tons and 45 feet of vehicle and it's a fantastic feeling.
