I think that to start smoking in our current culture where everyone knows the effects is stupid.

I do, however believe that addiction can be very serious, and smokers can have little control over the habit.

EDIT: I'd also like an 'I don't smoke, but want to post my opinion without being a **** about it' option on the poll.

Huh, you got me wrong. There are areas here where people can smoke all they want. I don't like it when smoking people start smoking when they're NOT in those areas (and obviously when there are people that could breath in the fumes - if you smoke outside in an empty street then I don't find any problems in that) .

Like, the entrance of my school. Students who weren't allowed to smoke indoors all bunched up near the entrance of the school because the roof sticks out a bit - when it rains it's still dry there. That was annoying as hell, so the school decided to play a special smoke-cabin further away from the entrance, like one of those closed busstop cabins. Now it's all fine again.

Then I would still like to point out that the smokers who are causing the fumes should try not to harm others.
I'm not a fanatic for anti-smoking, I'm not waving banners around the place and harassing people into not-smoking, but I consider it a bad thing.
I can completely agree with your desire to avoid cigarette smoke, and I applaud your school for offering an option that generally satisfied boith sides in the debate. I have to wonder, though, if you're in school, the school shouldn't be allowing underage smoking AT ALL.

I suppose that's a different argument, though.

Living in a society that has a responsibility to treat your lungs after you ruin them yourself, I'd say there's a bloody right to discriminate.

People forget this with their freedom rants. If you had to pay for every stupid shit someone else does, you would be in right to make some rules. That's the flipside of society taking care of you.
1. My job is every bit as likely to kill me as my smoking is. I'm an industrial roofer, so I'm behind miners and ahead of road-resurfacing crews for exposure to potential carcinogens.
2. You're completely ignoring the fact that SuVs and 4x4 trucks pollute FAR than any group of smokers do.
3. If you insisted that your goverment allocate money from sin taxes to treatment of the long-term health problems, then the smokers would be paying for their own future health-care.
4. Life will kill you, too.

I've always been targetted for my Smoking. The Hunters and Boomers all say I'm just a wus that hides out on top of buildings and attacks people from afar. They say my damage output is much weaker than everyone elses. Soon they start teamkilling me if we start losing. And the tanks, they just pretend I'm not there...

OT: Don't smoke, but I can see why people are mad at people who smoke because 1. they are harming themselves with smoking and irritating them may get them to stop, and 2. they are harming everyone else/their surroundings with second-hand smoke/making it smell bad.

The vehicular pollution argument is sound imo, and bluepilot said it best when she pointed out that smokers don't enjoy nearly the social protection of fat people (heart disease = #1 killer in U.S.). I see a lot of people complaining about the smell and declaring their "right" not to be annoyed by it. Well guess what? I hate being around people who wear bad perfume or have noticeable BO. Do I have a "right" to ban perfumes I don't like or to impose an "unacceptably low frequency of showers" tax? People will say things, do things, and act in a way that will offend and annoy you. That's a cost of freedom. Deal with it, stand somewhere else (God knows we've been kicked out of most areas already), and stop being rude.

On the other hand, what CabooseKill400 said is true. As smokers, yes we get hounded by rude people regularly, but we do enjoy a social advantage. Smoking provides a perfect reason to gather in one spot with a few people, be they friends or strangers, and pass a few minutes with conversation - something that otherwise doesn't happen very often. I'm eager to quit for health and social reasons after a few years of smoking, and I'm finding it excruciatingly difficult. I would in fact pay several thousand dollars just to be able to wake up in the morning and not want a cigarette. But do I regret starting in the first place? Absolutely not. Some of the best times I've had with my friends at high school and college we're experienced behind a lit cigarette. And I wouldn't trade them for anything - certainly not those "7 minutes of your life for every cigarette" that the anti-smokers can't stop prattling on about.

Not at all, most people at my college smoke and most of my mates do, those of my mates who don't and people I know in general who don't couldn't care less anyway.

I think mostly the attitude to smokers isn't that bad at all, like I said, my mates who don't smoke and others I know who don't have enough life experience and go outside enough to be able to realise that people smoke and saying things like 'I hate all smokers, they're disgusting and I hope they all die' just makes you sound like a bit of a Larry Lonesome. Of course, if you're surveying for opinion on an internet forum, alot of the people here may not have any friends outside of WoW, let alone any who do controversial things such as smoking, drinking and taking drugs.

So yea, I think with the majority of people are pretty chill about it, both smokers and non-smokers, but you do get the odd one who is strangely millitant about their anti-smoking views, but like I say, these mostly exist on the internet and the reason for their hate is the same reason the people can hate people in general, because they don't actually know anyone from their chosen hate group personally.

Completely agree. I'm a non smoker who's allergic to tobacco (so much so that I will die after about 30 minutes of exposure) but I'll defend the rights of people do it, so long as its not around me.
No disrespect intended, but you can't actually be allergic to cigarette smoke. Raw tobbaco, you can be allergic to it, but smoke, while you might not like it and it might make you cough or something, can not actually give you an allergic reaction. See, you need quite large molecules to induce an allergic reaction and they just can't survive in that kind of heat.

Y'see, there's a problem. You're not killing yourself with just your money, it's my money too.

Countries with free healthcare have to increase taxes to deal with smokers and their glorious black lungs. The insurance premiums goes up for everyone because people live unhealthy lifestyles, such as smoking, eating unhealthy, and drinking. They're killing themselves and we have to pay for it.

In a way, it's very much my business what people kill themselves with, especially when they're doing it with my money.

So excuse me for approving of making it as hard as hell for you to enjoy your death stick in peace. You're burnin' me money. You're more than welcome to spit in any poor food I choose to indulge in.
You seen the tax on cigarettes these days?

For the most part I couldn't care less what other people do to their bodies. I'm a non-smoker but I work in the hospitality industry so not smoking puts me in the minority.

I will say that the only thing that ticks me off about smokers (and I'm pretty sure a lot of the other non-smokers in my industry will agree) is the constant need to go out the back for a cigarette whilst there's shite loads of work to be done or in the middle of service.

I know it's stupid! Smokers are dealing with an addiction and in stressfull environs like kitchens they need those cigarettes to keep themselves focused, but when your an hour into a busy service and your lookin' round for some help to get the food done and out for 40 hungry mouths that just came in at the same time without booking and your wingman has picked this time to go and light up it's frustrating.

I feel sometimes irritated by no-smokers.
I feel most times irritated by smokers.

and i feel you should definitely be treated differently for smoking. now of course you already know its unhealthy, but remember its unhealthy for eveybody not just those who smoke... but again you know that too... so then smokers choose to harm themselves, environment, others, etc. etc. dispite knowing that they are doing so. Kind of an asshole choice in my opinion.
its like, for example, choosing not to ever cut my grass. This would be harmful to myself and my neighbors, yet i do it anyway bc in my defense its my yard can do what i want with it. that would be an asshole thing to do. (sorry its the first example that came to me)
So yea i constantly remind friends/family/whomever that smoking is bad and they should quit even though of course they know that. The right thing to do would be to quit, and i tend to appreciate it when others do the right thing.
Although, i would never force someone to quit. I'll defend your right to choose to smoke up and down, but that doesn't mean i wouldn't try to goad you into not smoking.

i'm sorry but in the end choosing to smoke is just plain idiotic to me.

If you roll around in shit people tell you to take a bath, if you light a cigarette people tell you to stop smoking. Not to mention the smoke not only smells awful, but is bad for your health and unpleasant to inhale (that is if your lungs aren't already shriveled and black).

I imagine it's more-so just where you're from. I don't smoke, but I a lot of people who do seem to complain back home in Utah; however, I'm in Newfoundland right now, and everyone around here seemingly smokes.

I know exactly what you mean. Ever since I started pissing in the kegs at the local pub people treat me like scum.

But seriously, as long as you keep it to yourself go nuts. If your smoking on the sidewalk... y'know, where people walk, non-smokers included... then yes I will descriminate.

Also if your one of the people that chucks cigarette butts on the ground (especially out car windows) then you can get fucked... Or at least stope being a wanker.

Moral of the story, piss in your own schooner, just don't let the spray touch anything of mine.
I smoke, but I don't drive. I will stop smoking outside when other people stop driving petrol cars ok? Seriously cars do more damage to air quality than all the cigarettes combined.
I'll stop laughing at you when you stop comparing our primary form of transportation to a habit which serves no purpose other than causing bad health.

If electric cars were available that matched petrol ones in price, preformance and accessibility then maybe you'd have a point, even then it would be a long time before the majority of the population could get their hands on them. As it stands, no. People deserve to be able to travel to their destinations in decent time and whilst I'd love to see cars that don't fill the air with their putrid stench, we don't live in that world quite yet.

I do however agree with the person further down that excessivly overpowered vehicles need to be restricted to those who need them. If you have a 4WD then you sure as hell better take it 4 wheel driving, otherwise its just a waste of fucking resources and you're a blody wanker.
