So, I'm pretty pessimistic as it goes (apparently it's common among Escapist members) and whenever something on the news pops up such as yet another school shootout or some celebrity dying, I seriously don't care. I suppose you could say I'm a little hollow inside, but I didn't even care that much when the tsunami hit, and heres why: I know the worlds a horrible place, and I know bad shit is gonna' happen. Constantly.

So what about you lot? Do you find yourself caring or not?

I don't particularly have a lot of interest in news stories as a whole. My usual rationalisation is along the lines of "if it doesn't directly affect me or anyone I care about, it probably isn't worth my attention, particularly if I can't do anything about it". It's not universal, but certainly seems to be the case a vast majority of the time.

I'm a compassionate person, but if you let yourself get too torn up by all the tradgedies in the world you won't survive long.

i like to focus on the cartoon sections of the newspaper or maybe sudoku if im stuck in a windowless room with nothing else to do, the actual news rarely bothers me unless its directly affecting me (as thecaptainof said before :p)

I feel like you every day.
Except it's gotten worse to the point where I laugh and sort of identify with the problem.

I was in the process of typing a longer post but I'd most likely be put on probation if I mentioned how I felt about certain events, and it would offend those who lost people in them.

I have a similar view, I think "there'll always be fucked up people doing fucked up things" so it's bound to make the news eventually.

Really whenever I see some terrible tragedy on the news I just think "it's a shame but this isn't the first time it's happened and it damn sure won't be the last"

That said I get really emotional over sotries like Josef Frietzel.

Seeing something on the news and having no reaction is a lot different to being there.

I always used to think "yea big deal its flooding in so and so" until I was in one. Now I can relate to those people, understand whats going on, and feel sympathy for them.

I'm both apathic and empathic.

Apathic towards all the news.

Empathic when something bad happens to people close to me.

So, going by example that Sam and Max showed me, I don't care about people I don't know and strangers.

Well, that's the same thing.

News is nothing but a bunch of Republicans trying to scare us into giving them more power..."
There, fixed that for you. And yes, I agree that there is very little I can do about it, and I have enough of my own problems without dealing with something I can't control, so fuck it.
Well, sort of, although being British I rarely find myself caring about how much power Republicans have or how much they control the media. :p

Nah. I never find myself caring about anything that doesn't affect me.
Sure, school shootings are terrible. Did anyone I know die? No? By distance those people weren't close to me so none of it mattered.

Sure, tsunamis are bad just as are any other natural disasters. More often than not though, these tragedies hit places I've never been to and likely will never go. People die and it's a tragedy I suppose but I had absolutely no relation with any of the people in question (who are also incidentally dead).

Death happens all the time, every day. Whether people die by natural causes or in freak accidents "before their time" it truly doesn't affect me or hit a button anywhere in my system that makes me feel pain for them. Sure, I'll be polite and pay a brief homage to them if called to do so but as long as it wasn't a friend or family member or me myself who was victim to this tragedy then I just can't care.

And those last few posts sum it up. The human race is a callous one. No one gives a fuck about anything unless it directly affects them and don't dare deny it. Those who do are just arseholes.

With the amount of shit that goes unreported by the absurdly corrupted media system, it's impossible to even know whether or not what you're watching is the most important thing that happened that day. So no, I don't care about anything. Except crooked cops. I fucking HATE police brutality stories. I want to stab those cops in the dick.

Any time there is a horrible news story, I have to laugh first. For instance, there was a nursing home shooting rampage in NC a little bit ago. My first thought? "Wow...that's something...the shooter obviously had self-esteem issues. Why else would he go for the easiest targets he could find?" And, when my grandparents got cancer, I was probably the only one in my family who didn't really react. Death happens. Deal with it.
