So, do you ever pick to be a female chracter when you play s video game?

If it's a game like Fallout, I don't. That's because I like to think the character is me.

If it's something like Street Fighter or Mortal Combat, then yes, I do. The reason is that the woman are usually quicker and are able to tear up the other characters.

If the main character of a game is female, sure why not, But I generally create male characters as a fantastically superior version of me.
Yknow one that knows how to hold a gun and has more than one big ab.

I usually only play as a female character if I am not given a choice. I like to play characters that resemble me, in rpgs anyways.

Sure. Sometimes a female character has better options (Fallout 3, KotORII), better stats for my purposes (Oblivion), equipment options I might want (Demon's Souls), better voice acting (Jedi Academy) or is just more attractive to look at (all of them).

All the time. Well, not every single time but in cases where there is a character creation system, I will often lean towards a female character.

I think of fighting games a little differently though. My choice there is certainly partially determined by look but also by how they play. In a game with character creation it's generally the case that both male and female characters play the same.

I only do it when it benefits me in some way.

For example, in Final Fantasy XI I played the all-female Mithra race because, A, their stats were superior for how I wanted to play and approach the game, and B, the male models in the game were pretty butt-ugly most of the time. I did also have a male Tarutaru secondary character though.

again, like most people here, if the main character is female it would not put me off buying the game and i agree with with Tanner on the fighting games, but if the game gives me the option to create my own character, then its usually a guy just because i give him my name and things like that

Only time i've tried being a girl is with Mount and Blade because they had better stats in the area i wanted.
In the end, i got tired of the multiple orgasms every time i got hit and went back to being a medieval-me...with bigger muscles. And a sword.

The game feature a character creation or choose between the two genders then I will be the male character. For games like e.g. Stree Fighter then I will play as the female character when I feel like it.

I do it 'cause I am a girl. Sometimes I have to deal with only male models, but it's nice to have the option, even when she does look nauseating (Pokemon B&W).

Every male gamer I've watched play games also makes themselves a girl from time to time. I know the reasoning of a few (the stereotypical 'i like to watch a girl running around because they're more attractive models and i don't have any stat losses'), but not all.

All the time in RPGs, numerous reasons, I don't like playing some power-fantasy version of myself for one thing, they're far nicer to look at, voice acting can be a lot better, I find it fun to play something I don't know, and if I get bored I can take all their clothes off and run around in a circle whilst giggling like a little girl.

Whaddya mean, immature?

I am female, so yes, I like playing female characters. Except in MMORPGs. Then my characters are men. I don't get hit on, but sometimes it's a bit awkward when my leveling partner discloses facets of male life I wasn't aware of before...

I typically find heroines in games to be more compelling than their male counterparts. However, if it's left up to me to choose which gender to assume, knowing that regardless the outcome of scenarios and the overall story will remain the same, then I'd probably be more inclined to go with the upright end of the gender demographic.

In hindsight, I wish I had voted "sometimes".

I'm a man and I will play as female characters from time to time. It allows me to develop a different perspective on the story, as well as giving me a change of pace from the numerous other games I am forced to play as a male.

Fallout 3, Fable II, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and World of Warcraft are all games I play or have played where I gladly choose to play as a female. It's less of a chauvinistic choice and more of an understanding one.

Plus, it makes the game more enjoyable for me, occasionally.

Given the choice, I always play a female character at first. They're more bearable, somehow. It would be interesting if somebody implemented stat differences between genders, though that would anger a lot of people. It would certainly make games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age feel even more authentic.

Oh, and I'm male.
