I like to play as women a lot. Admittedly usually to make them look attractive, but not always. Sometimes I just feel like I'd rather embrace a certain story line with a girl protag.

Depends. I have a friend with whom I usually synchronize gameplays and making it a contest (Did you do that quest? Who did you romance? How long did it take to finish? What is your kill count?) and if he plays a dude, I play a gal and vice versa. He plays mage, I play warrior, etc.

If the game is bad, that way we know what happens on both sides when we exchange impressions. If it's good we replay at will. It also depends on the VO if it's there.

If I don't have the choice I won't let it ruin the game, but I find it easier to connect to the character if I pick the same gender...but that's usually in an RPG where it's meant to have personal values...I'm not sexist though, I mean Metroid and Mirrors Edge are some of my favourite games and playing as a female in that enhances the players experience in my opinion...

Granted that most games have male protagonists, I play as a female whenever presented with the option. I often play games (that I liked) twice through, once as a male and once as a female, and there's usually not a bit of difference in the gameplay experience.

Uh, I actually sometimes throw a hissy and refuse to play the game if there are only male characters. Unless it's something with a strong character story and there are basically no character customization options of any kind, even then I have a whine about it.

I also don't play games if there is significantly more female nudity than male. If the women are showing elbows, the men had better

If the only difference between the sexes in the game is a cosmetic one, then I'll almost certainly go with the female character. I'm a female and I can sometimes enjoy myself more if I pretend the main character is me. So in RPGs and such I almost exclusively play as women (at least for my first playthrough).

I usually don't play many games that let you pick a gender to play as.

If it's just a cosmetic thing, then I pick based on a few factors:
1. If it's a single player game like Fallout, then I really don't care and just pick whatever.
2. If it's an online game with loot/items (mmo) I may play as a girl because people tend to give you free stuff sometimes... :p
3. If the choice is ether a girl or a flamboyant guy in puffy pants (Aion's caster classes anyone?) I'm probably going to pick a girl.

Overall though, I'm more likely to pick a male character for my primary, and sometimes a female as an alt
