Title says it all. In many RPG games, you are given the option of choosing the gender of your player character. As such, it's entirely possible that a player could choose to play not as their own sex, but rather their opposite.

Do any of you do this? An if so (or not so) please give a reason why.

I would have made this a 4 option poll to see if more women play men or men play women etc but yep quite frequently play as a female, especially mass effect where I played so far only as femshep

Yes. I want to see if there is any extra dialogue when playing as another gender. Also looking at the backside of a female is much better than looking at some guys ass.

@OP: FYI, your post is dangerously lacking in content. If you're going to be posing such a question, the least you could do is answer it yourself and give your own reasoning.

OT: Yes. If there's a functional difference between the sexes, I'd pick the sex that was more advantageous.
Else, if the RPG was in the 3rd person, I'd tend to pick female. If I'm going to be spending umpteen hours staring at the avatar's hindquarters, I find the female form more pleasing to the eye.

Not usually. I've tried a couple of times, as an experiment to see if my actions would differ if I was chosing a female avatar, but I never usually get far, because I just can't put myself in the right mindset. I like to role play quite intensely in games, put myself in the role, and whilst I can play as an already fully developed female character (like the tomb raider reboot) I have trouble filling in a blank character when they're already so visually different from me.

Not on my first playthrough but if I like the game then my second run is usually female.

I usually do, with no deep reason besides eye candy (when it's possible to have a look at your character), or I simply prefer the female voice (like in Mass Effect).

Sometimes.

Whether it's to try out all the options, to have some character balance/differences (MMOs), because I prefer the VA (Mass Effect), or because it's a better story that way (FO3).

Pretty much all the time. I find it lets me role play more.

When I play as a male character I tend to project myself into them, doing and making choices that I'd make.

Play as a female though and I starting think about what they'd do, how would their background change the choices they make.

I find it gives me more freedom.

I play an even split of males and females in RPGs. Really just depends on the character I want to play at the time. In MMO type games where the story either sucks or doesn't matter I generally go female simply because the female avatars usually look better.

If i have the choice i usually play a woman. It doesn't help that most RPGs only offer muscled hunks as male options which i can't really identify with.

I do, but a lot of it depends on the character creation. I play whatever gender looks better, and for human races that usually means if I can make a bishounen I'm going to play male. If I can't I play female. In TES I'll never play a female argonian because they look off to me for some reason.

I usually depends on the voice actor, if any. I chose female in Mass Effect because I preferred her voice actor to the male's, I preferred a female in Saint's Row because one of the female voice actors was better than the men's.

I usually play my second character (Evil warrior class) as a female as I find it's fun to play a character that is your exact opposite. As a generally good male who is not that amazing in a fight, it's interesting to play as an evil woman who can crush skulls with her bare hands.

If the game has voice acting, I'll play the first bit as each gender, and decide which voice I want to be listening to for the whole game. As such, I tend to about a 50/50 split. For games without voice acting I tend to stick with a male character.

if theres no difference between male or female il just flip a coin to decide for my character, if there is a difference il try both and when it comes to replaying il pick the one i liked the most

Yes depending on the game.

If it is the same story all the way through then I usually play my standard male warrior character, finish and be done with it.

If the game makes changes based on your choice of gender and/or if it has multiple paths then I'll do the above for first playthrough and then play a female character for the second making different choices.

It really does depend, If there is a difference like in FE:A then Yes to get many of the unique dialogue options. Sometimes when I go full mage in a Western RPG it's a girl but I almost always play as a dude.

It changes from character to character.

Each character I make is different and will have different ideals and reasoning. Gender tends to be based in how good the character models look.
