I've noticed the dread/scorn directed towards R&P for some time now. Tonight I came across this comment in the Off-topic Discussion forum:

The Wykydtron said:
Woah. You actually go into the R&P sections? Post in them no less?! Can't tell whether you're terribly brave or hopelessly foolish.

I wandered in there once... A long time ago. Could not hit the back button fast enough >.<
I've enjoyed my forays into R&P. I personally have learned a lot about a lot.

But I can also understand why it has such a reputation for being just one step above The Escapist's dreaded basement. It doesn't help that there are a few folks who seem to live to troll others--always within the guidelines, mind you--in the R&P section.

What are your views on R&P?

I like going in there because sometimes -gasp- I learn something. I'm more or less a blank state when it comes to politics so having both sides to an issue or hot-topic is good.

You left a comment but didn't 'vote' on the poll?

That's...unusual, if you don't mind me saying.

I do not fear it, I read topics and threads on there a lot, but I very rarely post there. Not smart enough for it, nor do I wish to get involved in heated debates.

While I admire your modesty I must say that there are quite a few others who don't let their lack of "expertise" stop them from posting.

P.S. Another 'No Voter'. Is the poll screwed up? This is the polar opposite of most polls I've made.

EDIT: No pun intended.

Bad habit. I've stopped voting in the poll for quite a while now, not exactly sure why. I guess I don't see the point in voting when I've already expressed my opinion. Might as well vote now!

tbh, the 'scariness' of R&P is overblown and exaggerated.

The threads there are no more flamey than sexism threads in Off-Topic, or Wii U threads in Gaming Discussion.
I never visited Gaming Discussion, but I know what you mean about the sexism threads in OT.

But those are specific subjects while people--some people, anyway--seem to view the entire R&P Forum in the light that every thread in R&P is Flame Ground Central.

Been there once or twice.
Wasn't scary at all, and I agree, it's reputation is completely blown out of proportion.
Had a few enlightening conversations that wasn't all "ANGRY ANGRY ANGRY".

I stay away from it.

Religion and politics invariably bring out people's inner retard. I know if I go in there I'll rapidly start losing respect for folks around here.

I think it's a mix of half the threads being flame wars waiting to happen, not even the funny types of flame wars either. Just the really depressing ones. And half the fact that I don't think much, if any of the R&P section is interesting. Plus I would most likely misword something if I posted in a particularly touchy subject and get ripped to pieces

I find it difficult to care about much of the stuff either way since I think mostly all politics would be improved if they just sat down, stopped endlessly going round in circles and tried to find some middle ground

And my views on Religon is also a bit touchy. I wonder why people think they must, must, must follow some god just because he is powerful? Like there's not much of a better reason given in The Bible and God does act like a bit of a wanker in the OT rather often. You know what we call that IRL? A dictatorship! What fun!

Maybe you can't apply human logic to a god that easily but still.

And goddamn what is this basement? Me and a friend came to the conclusion that it is the R&P since it is at the bottom of the drop down box almost. Don't tell me the Advice Forum is that bad?

No, why would I fear a discussion forum? Even if someone is saying something completely stupid and being a real dick about it I can just ignore them or laugh at them. I don't exactly have much interest in the forum but to fear a discussion forum is just silly. Also I'm sure a lot of people on there provide some good discussion, and the whole 'flamewars' thing is way overblown and exaggerated.

Some of them get rather heated. The problem comes in when they start arguing over a belief. Since a belief is metaphysical there really is no right answer and yet people scream and yell defiantly as if there is. That part drives me nuts.

I once said I didn't care that a bunch of priest blessed a highway because of the number of accidents there. That it shouldn't affect even the most hard-core atheist because

1) It doesn't affect at all the way your car drives on the road
2) Since your atheist you don't actually believe the road was every truly blessed to begin with.
3) There was no unsightly religious symbol so it wouldn't even distract you to drive that road.

Well apparently that's complete bull shit and people should respect other peoples beliefs aka theirs, completely missing the point that by using that argument they are being hypocritical. This is because they are not respecting the beliefs of the Baptist that blessed the road.

-shakes head- I just can't handle religion threads. You'd think I would I match well with most of them. I hate religion and find it a cause of much suffering in the world, but in that forum it just seems to go beyond that. I guess you could say people carry to much emotion into their arguments there.

You...don't know about the basement?!?

He doesn't know about the basement!?!

Well I'M not going to be the one to tell you. Gods, no! It's not safe to even talk too much about.

*shudder*

EDIT: Ask Vault101. I think I recall that she'd been in there, once. She even described it. Brrr!

I don't fear it nor do I ever post anything in and view there. I'm just not a religious and political minded guy therefore I have no interest in that section of the forum. All I know that there quite a few flame wars in there at times.

Eh, alot of what ends up there starts of in off-topic and gets moved.

Anyway, I don't see what's scary about asking questions about things other than your avatar and why everyone likes MLP.

Mind you, there are loud and active members with questionable grasps on morality and reality over there, but it's not like they aren't everywhere else.

I disagree, sir. Daystar and Fappy never show up in R&P!

...or perhaps you were referring to other "loud and active members with questionable grasps on morality and reality"?

It's where I hang out when I'm on these boards (so, all day pretty much). I'm not a frequent poster there (or anywhere really), but it's the most interesting board for reading.

Yah, I recall seeing you there upon occasion, I think.

Congratulations on you cancer remission, by the way!!! My mom's had and survived mouth cancer twice (she used to smoke) so I know what a stresser being diagnosed with the Big C can be.

Off-Topic: What kind did you have, may I ask? Did you have to undergo radiation therapy? My mom did and it left her weak as a kitten. I had to take care of her for months--and early on it was hard just to get her strong enough to walk again--though part of that was because she was elderly and fairly feeble to begin with.

I'm tempted to shout "THIS IS MY WORLD MR. ANDERSON".

Yes I post there often and I find it a joyous experience, though I was taken aback at how quick everyone is to dismiss any uncommon views as trolling.
