im an active participant of politics and religion forum. its nice to see different views and to express mine. sometimes i even learn soemthing. i dont see why peopel are so afraid of it. then again ive seen forums where politics and religion discussion will get everyone involved perma-banned. and its not like those were flame wars. it seems that some people/admins cant take different views and therefore must censor it.

I've heard people accuse the Mods/admins of intolerance towards "different views". I remember the very first time I posted in R&P this was the OP's first sentence:

Katatori-kun said:
I am utterly sick of the right-wing trolling that the mods are permitting on this forum so I thought I'd make a post about religion.
and this started the last paragraph in the thread's OP

So I guess there's not a super huge amount of discussion value to this, I just wanted a break from mindless partisan cheerleading.
The most recent thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/528.394836-Cross-Dressing-Male-Student-raped-by-Muslims-University-Students-shouldnt-provoke-certain-groups] started by Danyal resulted in his being suspended. On the thread's first page a few of us wondered WHY he had been suspended. I posted my theory, then PM'd a Mod out of curiosity, who told me the matter was being debated in the Moderation Team [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/Moderation-Team] group.

I followed the link and read Danyal's argument against being suspended and Nasrin's and others' explanation why.

The interesting thing to me (by the way this was the first time I've ever been to the Moderation Team user group and FYI I didn't post myself, just lurked) was that Danyal had other posters arguing both for and against him.

For my own part I understood and basically agreed with Nasrin's points as to why the suspension was valid.

Can you give any similarly specific examples which--in your case--pertain to the Mods'/admins' decisions which you judge as being intolerant?

I'm honestly interested.

dreaded basement.
What are your views on R&P?
Is there actually a basement or is that just a myth?

OT: In what little I've seen, the regular posters are concrete in their views and will never change their minds no matter what. The people who read or post once or twice are those who are merely curious.

Verbal wars are healthy in moderation.
Though I can only take so much without getting an aneurysm.

Mostly its just people trying to look smarter than other people. People just waving around their E-peens.
I am intrigued by your waves of sources and the well made post. I cannot wait to hear more about theese arrogant posters that haunt the RnP board. (semi-sarcasm) seriously though. Not-cool. People there are mostly looking for healthy debate, you could spare being a bit nicer.

when i spoke about bad admins i meant other forums. maybe that wasnt clear enough. i think admins here are very tolerant, after all, i never got so much as a warning :D
I do also wonder why the poster you mentioned got a suspension and i did read the moderator team group talks as well. i dont know the guys history or what he got those warnings for in the past, so i cant comment on that, but in that specific post i found nothing ban-worthy. of course this is internet, where admins are dictators and they can chose to be good or cruel ones.

This is the key post from Nasrin:

@Danyal: Saying "X has done Y" when you're referring to one individual that happens to be a member of group X implies that the group itself is somehow responsible. Unless you have some proof that any of this was done on religious grounds, your comments are mud slinging.
EDIT: The heart of the issue is that you fail to demonstrate how the religion of the assailants is relevant to the act (rape) in the body of your post. If you're making that claim, you need to at least address it and discuss that in the OP.

Apparently Danyal has openly admitted to having an "Islam obsession". That kind of admission coupled with habitual "mud slinging" which he had already be clearly warned about was what lead to his suspension.

Like I said--the Mods watch troublemakers more closely.

As for "of course this is internet, where admins are dictators and they can chose to be good or cruel ones." Danyal repeatedly said that posts like his were perfectly acceptable on Reddit but Nasrin and others repeatedly reminded him that The Escapist isn't Reddit (Duh!!!) and that he knew the rules and guidelines well enough from previous warnings to have known better than to engage in "mud slinging".

Frankly I see them less as cruel dictators, given the guidelines and the Appeals system (which Danyal said he hadn't tried because it took too long in his opinion/experience) PLUS the fact that any poster can PM a Mod to get an opinion on the acceptability of a posting (or the idea for a thread), and more as men and women who are trying their level best to do a hard job while being fair to everyone.

Where's the "Hell no! I'm a regular"-option?

Seriously, about 80 percent of the I spend reading or posting around here was in the R&P section. Mostly because I simply like the topics being discussed there and reading around has led to not a few instances of rare insight for me. Of course, if you are there long enough the soap-opera aspect has its very own appeal too.....

Speaking of which....

You might want to take a look into the big moderation sticky in R&P if you haven't yet. It was specifically created to address most of the complains levied against the mods in the R&P section, mostly perpetuated by Katatori and Danyal. As for the latter, he has a very ...errr....colourful history in the section, so it's not surprising that people jump to his aid or dismiss him on this basis.

There should be an option for "I fear the Off-topic board" seriously. People here are more hostile/unfriendly than anything I've encountered on RnP, which is why I stay there.

Normally, I don't go to the R&P forums, mainly because of my collection of views that stem from social and political critics like George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce and so on.

I think I went there a couple of times, maybe even posted once...but that's about it.

All in all, I'm here for some gaming news and the oddball-ish thread. It's an OK place here in the Escapist.

I tend to stay away from them not because I'm scared of them, but because if one gets me on a rant it is not good for anyone.
