I have O positive blood, and I gladly give it whenever possible. I do it as regularly as I can, considering my blood can be given to anyone, even newborn babies in the neonatal ICU.

Hate to piss on the parade but it's O Neg that anyone can have, not positive.

All about the antibodies, having Rhesus Positive antibodies and giving them to someone Rhesus Negative and you end up in a real 'shits hit the fan' situation.

Really? I was misinformed. I thought that nurse looked new :< Oh well, I'll still give anyway. Those blood banks need all the help they can get.

Good on you. O+ is common but it all helps.

As everyone can receive O- but O- must only ever receive O- it's better for there to be stock piles of it for those who need it. Admittedly, as I've seen, O- is a real lifesaver to have plenty of in the hospital.

But yeah, from experience, I can definitely say O- is the one for everyone.

Sorry to drag on, it's 4.15am here and I'm having trouble focusing :D

Nope. I have AB- blood, which is apparently useless to anyone who isn't also AB, thus making the demand for it rather low apparently. Or that's how I understood it anyway after someone went through a lengthy explanation of the whole blood type thing that really just left me somewhat confused on the subject.

AB- is a universal receiver of - blood types.
AB+ is a universal receiver of all blood types and is a universal donor of blood plasma

It's still important to donate blood, plasma is important for heart surgery, cancer treatment and other issues with cardiovascular system.

I believe I'm also AB-... though I could have sworn I was AB+. I'll have to check.

Other -AB's need your blood for a more accurate match.

EDIT: I'm AB- too

Nope. Despite having absolutely no blood-born STIs or other infections and absolutely nothing that reasonably should bar me from doing so, and despite possessing both a willingness to donate, and an O+ blood type that I'm sure the vampires love, I don't pass the "You must be this heterosexual to join" bar.

Oh, they give some BS about "Oh, well.. diseases", except you can totally have anal sex with a woman, and apparently their insides are filled with candy and gumdrops, but if you do it, once, ever with a guy after like 1979 (and you mathematicians out there will figure out that's before I was born), you're barred for life. A precaution I could see and forgive in 1980 when they didn't know any better, but oh well.

It's messed up I know, and frankly I lied when I donated blood. Of course they screened my blood all the same and found nothing wrong... so that begs the question... why bar gays, bisexuals or even just guys who inadvertently had sexual contact with another man from donating blood? It's all about exclusion and policy from the 1980's that doesn't really make much sense (as I said) because they screen everyone's blood for STIs and most young people have an equal chance of caring STIs regardless of orientation.

See, that's the thing that bothered me too. It's this sort of insulting intellectual dishonesty on their part, like I felt like they were trying to pull a fast one on me. Justifying bigotry with this sort of outdated pseudo-science, and hoping we all blink and don't notice.

Then being like "It's too haaaaard to chaaaange. We're not homophobic, it's just haaaard to chaaaange."

Thing was that, I guess I was too trusting of an organization like the Red Cross (though, the whole 'Cross' in the name should have tipped me off, but I never learn), so I naively didn't think to lie on the thing, and so I'm permanently barred.

What bothers me, also is that I wouldn't be able to donate blood to my own mother, even if she was OK with it. For her own protection. Despite the fact that O+ being an almost universal donor (negatives are pretty rare), O+ is very rare (so I'm told) and can only accept from itself (and I guess O-, but that's even rarer).

And she needs surgery often, so I guess one of these times she could bleed to death, but that would be safer for her than icky Queer blood going to her.

I voted yes because I have in the past. That was a long time ago and I'm not really planning on doing so again. It hasn't really crossed my mind that is.

I can't, since I'm anemic, apparently my blood is of poor quality and isn't able to move oxygen throughout my body as well as it should, so giving any away is not allowed. Luckily I'm lazy and live a very sedentary lifestyle and it doesn't get in the way of my day to day life, but if I exert myself to much I get a headache D:

Well, I've donated once and I have O-, so I should more often. But, what the hell is this nonsense about anyone who's had man on man sex and not being able to donate? That is one of the most asinine things I've ever heard and something that might prevent me from donating in the future...

The last time I tried to donate was in high school and they said I am not allowed to as I am a potential carrier of Jakob-Cruetz... Creutz... Mad cow, because I lived in europe in the 80's. otherwise I would. (stupid cows, :p)

I have O-, yet my parents spent more than six months in the UK during the eighties, which means that everyone in my immediate family from my parents down at least three generations cannot give blood, on the off chance of being a carrier for Mad Cow. Sucks ass.

As soon as I hit 18 I'm getting an appointment. It's the least I could do.

I went in to a clinic for a blood test once, almost passed out from having about 25mL removed from me. That was so fun that I like to give blood as frequently as possible.

...
Yeah, no I don't. I would if my body would let me.

You know, this poll has been done before.
By me.

But yes, I give blood. As often as I can.
