Loa pretty much hit the mark precisely. Was going to say pretty much the same thing.

Only just recently enjoyed the benefits of installing games on my HDD i only had a 20gb before and recently upgraded.

1 perk installing games on the HDD is the 360 doen't sound like a rocket blasting off. Swear the DVD has to be one of the noisiest pieces on the console!

Only if its completely necessary like Amalur. I still have the 14gb hard drive and the 'It speeds up loading times' thing is bullshit for most games, or at least the difference is so small its not noticeable.

Now, I haven't had my PS3 for very long so this could be wrong but...

I thought the PS3 FORCED you to install the games. Every time I put a new game into mine, it tells me that I have to install a update to play it.

Yes, and I do it without exception on my 360. I have enough room and in most cases, it gives a noticeable difference.

I also do it on my PS3 when the option is available, though it often means I have to dump older game data to make more room. 60GB launch model, you know. Now that the number of worthwhile download titles keeps increasing, I find myself ever more juggling its limited space. I could put in a bigger HDD, but the thing is old and I don't think it's going to last much longer. Might as well save the money for when I'm forced to buy a new console.

I still have the old vacuum cleaner model with a 20GB hard-drive, but I still install them. I just need to clean up space every time I want to download something though. It helps in more ways than one by reducing loading files, improving game fluency and it's better for the console itself as well.

It automatically installs patches but you can quit instead of waiting for it to finish. It doesn't force you to install the entire game.

I never realized that you could skip that process...now don't I feel silly :)

I updated the OP to reflect the new info I now have regarding the PS3

If I want to install games I'll stick to PC.

Installing games on consoles only make them feel like inferior PC's.
