I do know my national anthem, and think it's pretty pitiful when people don't. Take some pride in your country, dammit.
I was brought up by a family who weren't exactly patriotic. We never watched the Queens speech (Well, I didn't, I was off doing whatever else) or anything else where people sing the anthem, football matches for example. Never sung or got taught it at school, so it's hard learning something you're not exposed to.
People aren't usually patriotic, they are now because the world cup is on. Usually it's "England is shit, grumble..."

No I don't know the words, no, no, no (unless boredom counts as a strong emotion), and [sub]no[/sub], respectively.

If you don't just want yes or no answers, you should ask open questions, not closed ones. ;)
Haha, the main reason I asked was because I remember reading an article when I was younger about a man who didn't know the words, I was surprised they made such a song and dance about it as he wouldn't have been the only one.

Oh, and I know low discussion threads are frowned upon here so I had to think of something else to talk about.

I only know the first part

Wilhelmus van Nassouwe
Ben ik van Duitsen bloed
Den vaderland getrouwe
Blijf ik tot in den dood

Een prinse van Oranje
Ben ik, vrij onverveerd
Den koning van Hispanje
Heb ik altijd geëerd

The lyrics make absolutely no sense at all in this day and age, but whatever.

I'm not much of a patriot. I like my country, but I don't think it's anything special just because I was born here.

I know the first part-- the good part, the one that people generally sing. I really can't help but know it because people insist on singing that shit for every damn game and every damn... thing.

Oh come on now. You don't want to have Frans Bauer's "Heb je even voor mij?" do you? :p

*Edit: Maybe fun to know (no impoliteness intended towards you, Hurr Durr) but the word "Duits" is a degenerate of the word: "Diets" which gave us the name Dutch.

I know mine, actually it's pretty poetic. (USA)

I also know Canada's, and I love the instrumentals for GB

To add more discussion, so I don't just get yes or no answers, do you partake in patriotism? Hand on heart, tears down the cheek when your flag goes up?
Do you feel strong emotions when you sing it?

[sub]
Do I sound like a therapist with the barrage of questions? [/sub]
1. Ja, vi elsker dette landet,
som det stiger frem,
furet, vaerbitt over vannet,
med de tusen hjem.
Elsker, elsker det og tenker
Pa var far og mor
Og den saganatt som senker
drommer pa var jord.

2. Dette landet Harald berget
med sin kjemperad,
dette landet Hakon verget
medens Oyvind kvad;
Olav pa det landet malte
korset med sitt blod,
fra dets hoye Sverre talte
Roma midt imot.

3. Bondene sine okser brynte
hvor en haer dro frem,
Tordenskiold langs kysten lynte,
sa det lystes hjem.
Kvinner selv stod opp og strede
som de vare menn;
andre kunne bare grede,
men det kom igjen!

4. Visstnok var vi ikke mange,
men vi strakk dog til,
da vi provdes noen gange,
og det stod pa spill;
ti vi heller landet brente
enn det kom til fall;
husker bare hva som hendte
ned pa Fredrikshald!

5. Harde tider har vi doyet,
ble til sist forstott;
men i verste nod blaoyet
frihet ble oss fodt.
Det gav faderkraft a baere
hungersnod og krig,
det gav doden selv sin aere -
og det gav forlik.

6. Fienden sitt vapen kastet,
opp visiret for,
vi med undren mot ham hastet,
ti han var var bror.
Drevne frem pa stand av skammen
gikk vi soderpa;
nu vi star tre brodre sammen,
og skal sadan sta!

7. Norske mann i hus og hytte,
takk din store Gud!
Landet ville han beskytte,
skjont det morkt sa ut.
Alt hva fedrene har kjempet,
modrene har grett,
har den Herre stille lempet
sa vi vant var rett.

8. Ja, vi elsker dette landet,
som det stiger frem,
furet, vaerbitt over vannet,
med de tusen hjem.
Og som fedres kamp har hevet
det av nod og seir,
ogsa vi, nar det blir krevet,
for dets fred slar leir.
I am somewhat patriotic, I at least try to carry the flag properly whenever I hold one.

Edit: Fixed the Norwegian letters.

I was wondering who knew the words to theirs. Yesterday, at a gig some guys behind me started singing ours before the band came on, they got the whole crowd singing. I only knew the "God save our gracious queen" so I just mumbled the rest.
Looking at it though, it's not exactly a hard song to remember.

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
There are 2 more verses you know. I can never remember all the words to them.

Yes, I know the words to God Save the Queen. As you say it's not hard to learn.

I dont mind it as an overall UK anthem, but I would prefer if we English had our own anthem like the other countries in the UK do. Many are of the mind Jerusalem would be good, and I'm inclined to agree.

I am a patriot, so I do get a bit misty eyed whenever the anthem is sung at Football and Rugby matches and whenever else I hear it in a patriotic sort of context :D

And unlike some, I've not just become a patriot now that it's the world cup. For all it's faults, I love Britain/England.

Woop! :p

Having been in choir, I HAD to not only know the words of the Star-Spangled Banner, but sing the proper pitches, all octave and a high of them.

Thanks to National Anathema, I know some of O Canada. Himno Nacional Mexicano kinda sneaked its way into my music library.

And as a bonus, you ALL know the lyrics to the Spanish Anthem: La Marcha Real, as it doesn't have any! XD

Listen:
Ignore the football part at the end. <.<

--

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
sind des Glückes Unterpfand:
Blüh im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland!

--

I know it by heart. I don't really care about it, though.

Oh say can you see, By the Dawns early light what so proudly we hailed Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I know most of the sung lyrics of the Swedish National anthem (pretty much the only one out there that doesn't praise war or the military directly, while praising the land that is "Svea Rike".

I'm Australian. We don't do "patriotism", especially not hand-on-heart nonsense. But I don't know anyone who doesn't know all the words to the first verse of our anthem (i.e. the one everyone sings), and I know several who know the second verse, too (myself included). I'd learn the rest of the verses, but since they're mostly about licking England's boots, I find them a little bit... I'll say outdated.

Don't get me wrong, I love my country, but I don't see what the song has to do with that. Honestly, I think the fact that so many Aussies know their anthem has less to do with caring about our country and more to do with caring about our sports teams.
