Personally I don't hold much store in IQ tests. I know some very intelligent people, witty, charming etc., who just don't 'get' them.

Further, it seems to me that whenever this question gets asked online, the numbers that come up are considerably higher than what people would claim in person. Just a thought.

As far as I can remember, my IQ scores range between 127-134. If your IQ is over 150, as some here are claiming, I sincerely hope you're doing something great with your lives, and not wasting your prodigious talents killing time on internet forums. Supposedly 'average' scores tend to be slightly over 100.

I seriously doubt anyone on the Escapist is a genius.
Only 5% of the world population is. The average is 100 for human beings, and if you have higher than 130, you're considered a genius.

Thing is, if you ask somebody on the internet, odds are that they've done an IQ test on the internet as well. And that kind of "IQ test" is simply WORTHLESS.

Internet tests just ask 20-ish questions. The real thing is 8 series of 20-30 questions (forgot how many, it's been ages since I've done one), which allows for more precision (if you happen to have a bad round, it can be evened out by the 7 other rounds, same goes for rounds where you score very high, naturally; it also rules out the odds of guessing several questions right thus upping your score).

The lowest I had on a non-internet IQ test was 121, the highest 127. So I guess I'm somewhere in between, it's been nearly a decade since I've done one, though (I'm 20 now).
The mensa internet test (which still has some credibility, but still, don't take it too seriously), I scored 32/33 (the Flemish version).
Internet tests, however, say I'm smarter than Einstein. Yeah, sure. Uh huh.

Didn't know Mensa had an internet test, so I went over to Mensa Sweden's website and checked it out. Turns out it was a test-test, meaning it checks if you're likely to succeed or not at the real test (seems to me the only difference is the real one's got double the amount of questions and double the time). I got "126 or higher", which it says is the max amount you can get on the test-test. I just signed up for the next real test session, so we'll see how it goes. It'll be interesting.

The closest thing to a test I've taken was "test the nation" which was laughable. All online tests however consist only of math questions and such which surely only "test" a small portion of your brain.

I'm sensing some hostility here...

Like I said, I have an IQ of 139 as of last year. I had it tested by a clinical psychology I was seeing in order to evaluate how much validity was in the argument that I had trouble associating with people my own age as a kid. It's legit enough...and it's also mostly worthless info.

I'm still a B student in college, and even if you consider that it's because I can't be arsed to put effort in these meaningless classes I have to take to graduate, my GPA is lower than would be expected of a 'genius'. I have an above-average vocabulary, I'm capable of pontificating with people on philosophical topics without too much brain strain, and I still do that thing where I walk into the kitchen to get a bottle of water from the fridge, but forget why I went into the kitchen five seconds later with the cold bottle of water in my hand.

Of course IQ isn't the be-all, end-all of intelligence! Most anyone with a an IQ above 115 could tell you that - how many of you out there do something relatively stupid on a regular basis? I'd bet money that most of us are aware that IQ doesn't mean a whole lot. It's just fun to compare numbers.

So please, chill out. This is just a fun discussion topic. No need to hate on the genius, brah. ^_^
I beg your pardon, my intent was humorous rather than aggressive. My fault, unreserved apologies for any implied hostility. It's been a rough day.

Our situations sound quite similar: I got some intelligence tests done when I was in therapy, for a variety of exciting behaviors that I won't go into here, and also scored exceptionally highly. I also didn't do very much work at university and didn't graduate nearly as well as I might have done. Be warned kids: drugs, booze and LAN gaming are fun but they don't move those grades anywhere but down. Totally worth it, of course.

I've been forced to sit through one ill-informed discussion on IQ and intelligence too many and it's obviously left a mark. Sorry for venting on you all, the internet makes trolls of us all eventually.

This thread is pointless if you just write scores

There are dozens of different tests measuring IQ. Someone mentioned he had 170, which is an impossible score on the test I've taken. The scales differ a lot, so write what test were you taking or just type "pretty high" or "avarage".
The scale does not differ, only the maximum that a test can determine. If a test has 10 questions and the hardest one asks what color a red circle is then obviously getting all the questions right means that you are something over an IQ of 60, but someone with an IQ of 60 or 200 would still get all of them right, so the maximum that test could determine is 60.

I've taken 4 IQ tests, and each one had a maximum that it could determine in the 140's, I've gotten all questions right in the required timeframe each time. So I could be 9999999 or I could be 141, who knows, but the scale does not differ, only that maximum IQ determinable for a perfect score on the test.

The only "official" test I took (one of those huge multi-hour ones that are administered by a professional psychologist) pegged me between 145 and 150. But your IQ changes as you age, and this was years ago.

I like how Isaac Asimov did the IQ thing--he took one of the paper multiple choice tests and got a 135, but he said "I only allowed myself half the time for the test, so I just doubled the score and I tell everyone my IQ is 270 because it amuses me to do so and provides an ego boost."

125.. pretty much right where I want to be..

Smart enough to know I'm not a genius, but not so smart that I feel compelled to make some great use of my overabundant intelligence.

And I apologize for the retaliation (which at the time I thought was just). You're too right - internet forums are a dangerous place. Who was it that said, 'beware, for while you stare into the thread, the thread stares back at you'? :D

Some people seem to be under the misconception that your IQ will change as you age - well, it might, but it really shouldn't. Any IQ test worth the name scales your score based on your age. People full of vim and vigour, aged 18-35 (ish) have to get more questions right in the same amount of time to score the same as someone elderly, or very young, but the score means the same thing.

In other words, if you take a test aged 21 and score 125, and then took the same test again aged 60, you should either get less right or take longer, but the score returned should still be 125 or thereabouts.

120. Around... 2 years ago, so I'm pretty chuffed considering I was 12 at the time.

The online tests I know almost only consist of logic questions. If an IQ test would only consist of math questions I would have a terrible score.

... Erm... this thread -is- pointless.

In the US Governmental Approved Intelligence Quotient test, the highest possible score is 140. It is impossible to get any higher than that. People who are posting scores higher than that are either lying, or taking a completely different test that uses a different scaling system. Under the -real- test, I have roughly 117-118, which is considered "advanced". 120-130 is "near-genius".

And don't bother asking me to source this information. Its straight from my school's guidance counselor's mouth. Simply go to your local highschool/college and -ask-.

Edit: I've also heard it called the General Aptitude Test, if that helps.

Also, IQ does not actually indicate intelligence. It is the ability to process information correctly and efficiently.
IQ was designed to say "Are you retarded or Not?". If your IQ is over 80, it doesn't matter.
Exactly.

Last time I checked it was 141, I rocked the math and spacial sections and fell flat on my face for the English bit, however, my command of the English language has somewhat improved since then, but I think my maths is worse, all in all it's probably still 141
