I tend to love a good RPG, but GOOD RPGs are far and too few in between.
For the past few years now I feel that Westerm RPG makers are outdoing their Japanese counterparts with releases like Morrowind, Dragon Age, KotOR, Mass Effect, ME2, Fallout 3, etc...
What makes a good RPG is also kind of hard to put a finger on really.
I think about Morrowind and Oblivon: Oblivion looks better and has some better gameplay (Radiant AI, improved combat, the "carry" feature), but it feels so lacking and empty. The Imperial City felt like a pretty small town to say Vivec. And yes I know Vivec is bigger technically, but shouldn't the heart of the Empire feel more ALIVE?
Oblivion had it's fair share of caves, small settlements, cities, treasures, ruins, and miscellaneous locale, but Morrowind seemed much more expansive and large because you essentially HAD to walk to nearly all the various locations of note. Fallout 3 was a great improvement upon Oblivion's ideas and new systems because of this. It forced you to take in your surroundings as you make your way to your next destination which should be an enjoyable part of an RPG in my opinion.
And as for Mass Effect/2 and KotOR/2 they introduce a core element of an RPG: UNIQUE and INTERESTING characters! Oblivon had 2 stand out characters, Fallout had many more, while Mass Effect/2 and KotOR/2 had so many fascinating characters and multi-branching scenarios in which you interact with them that you WANT to replay and see what other outcomes can be.
Anyway I guess that's enough ranting for now.
One more thing: Final Fantasy games have generally been good up until about 12. When you take away the open world to explore, you really depreciate what an RPG could've been.
