I could not care less about all the characters except for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik. Then again I am apparently the only person on Earth who absolutely hates the Adventure series. I still to this day cannot stomach Shadow's emo "badassery". He is so out of place in the colorful fun world of Sonic in my opinion. He to me is Poochie x1000.

Original the Character, do not steal!

At least Generations was pretty awesome. The first Sonic game I really enjoyed since Sonic3 & Knuckles.

Why can't they just go back to the classics? Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik. That's all we need. They don't even need to have personalities. Seriously, go back and play Sonic the Hedgehog 1-thru-& Knuckles, and tell me what characteristics these people had. Sonic is heroic and probably sarcastic. Tails is heroic and probably childishly naive. Knuckles is heroic and serious. Robotnik is bad.

Do we need anything else? I'm telling you, I love the original run of Sonic games, and if they would just try to recapture that experience and aesthetic I would play it. All this Final Fantasy/Woodland Critter crossover stuff is sickening. Just give me a fast-paced 2-D platformer with rings to collect and robots to jump on.

I do overall love the Sonic cast. My favourite Sonic game, and what happens to be one of my top 10 favourite games of all time, is still Sonic Adventure and I do credit part of that due to it's varying cast of both playable and not-playable characters. I like both the old characters and most of the new ones. There are some I don't like such as Chip (I find characters such as Slippy and Navi lovable so it takes a lot for me to find a character annoying but... gosh darn, Chip is annoying as can be) and others I have mixed feelings on (Shadow started off as a great character in Sonic Adventure 2, and I felt he had potential to continue to be a great character with Sonic Heroes hinting the new Shadow was merely a robot, but with him seemingly not being a robot clone of the original Shadow I find his later appearances uninteresting), but overall I like the cast of characters. A large cast of likeable characters is an aspect that draws me into the Sonic series and I've been rather disappointed that a lot of the instalments of the Sonic series haven't had characters other than Sonic playable (Sonic Boom is a must buy simply for having Tails, Knuckles, and Amy playable).

I don't have a problem with the characters, as a kid I use to read Sonic the Comic and that introduced several knew characters not from the games such as Porker Lewis the pig and Johnny Lightfoot the rabbit (20+ years since I read that comic yet I didn't have to google or even think hard for their names)
This post made me yelp with joy. I'm glad to hear of someone else who has read the UK's Sonic the Comic. It was and still remains my favourite comic book series, I remember many an afternoon sitting and reading them. So thanks for that Bitter Hobbit, you just made my day.

I like them but I really wish Sega would actually use them instead of having them be useless background characters that just cheer Sonic on. I haven't actually played Sonic Generations but from what I've seen there really is no reason for them to be there other than making the place slightly less plain.

I want to see more Sonic Adventure style games that have Sonic's friends doing their own thing and having their own stories and occasionally bumping into each other on the way.
I agree, they haven't been utilised much as of late. The last three Sonic games in fact have not had anyone but Sonic playable, and that's rather disappointing. I also agree that their should be more Sonic Adventure styled games, I love the character focused form of storytelling where you see the story unfold from different perspectives as well as the variation in each character's gameplay.

From that picture, I can name about 2/3 of the characters, and I like most of those I can name (though not necessarily the games they're from).

I can't say I hate most of the characters after the classic group,(Sonic, Robotnik, Tails, Knuckles) but I don't have much love for them either just by looking at them. The last Sonic game I played new was Adventure 2: Battle. Loved it when I was little, but I tried it recently and didn't really care for it. Though that had more to do with the game itself rahter than the characters that we are talking about.

Even though it does not count as playing a game. After seeing a sneak peek of newer characters in Sonic 06 and Shadow the Hedgehog via Game Grumps, I'm just glad I gave up on the universe a long time ago. The way I see it, if you love the games, and the universe, introducing all these colorful characters is perfect for the fans. For everyone else, they are weird and feel pointless.

One could say they symbolize how the simple, well regarded games with a small, but lovable cast is gone and replaced with convoluted plots in mediocre games filled with unlikeable characters shows the series's downfall.

I used to like most of the cast. Particularly before Sonic Heroes. When I was little, I thought characters like Shadow were awesome.

Then they decided to bring him back to life. Everything went downhill after that.

I think the cast has gotten waaaaaaaay too large. I like the main three (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles), and I like Shadow, but the rest of them seem superfluous.

I love the Sonic cast. I know almost all the ones depicted, though the most recent minor characters are lost on me.
Shadow is my favourite character, but I love to see all of them. Don't get me wrong, even I can see some of them were kinda lame, but I like most of the characters everyone else hates such as Amy Rose and Cream.
It does my head in when people go on about wanting solo Sonic games -_-

I just wish they'd add Bunny Rabbot to the games, I used to love her :3

For the ones that I know of, I only really like Sonic, Tails (moreso because I associate him with Sonic 2; as a character, he?s just like that annoying little brother who you let tagalong to your football games because he?s a good goalkeeper), Knuckles (my favourite character due to his personality, design, and backstory), Mecha Sonic, Rogue (don?t know why, but I kind of like that Sonic knows how to do sex appeal), Blaze (played my friend?s copy of Sonic Rush once; she looks cool and appears to be fairly inoffensive), Sally Acorn (?cos?she?s kinda hot?) and ? of course ? classic villain Eggman/Dr. Robotnik (unlike most Western fans, I don?t have a problem with the name ?Eggman?; it was the original Japanese name anyway, and fits his appearance).

The rest, I?m mostly indifferent towards. I only ever liked Shadow when I was younger because he was ?badass?, Cream?s only really good in Sonic Advance 2 if you want a quick and easy playthrough thanks to her Chao ?Cheese?, Amy?s just the obligatory female love interest character that isn?t even really a love interest, the Chaotix are ?meh?, and Big the Cat just seems stupid.
