I know that they can kick the current Australian government out if they are failing........

.....well......

......I'm waiting.
Don't you remember the Whitlam debacle!? If they did that again, they would certainly lose any power they still have over Australia (not much)
Bit before my time but I did google it.

Spose your right. As it is we are on the verge of becoming a republic.
Im only 16, we learnt it in year 10 history; besides I thought it was fairly common knowledge it was a big event.
And I wish we were that close, but it would require a referendum and Australia is notorious for voting down referendums.
They reckon after Elizabeth II dies, we'll try again, but even then there will have to be a grace period to stop people feeling bad for voting yes.
I've never been to concerned with our past politics. Not much I can do about it anyways so I don't really bother.
[sub](yes I'm aware the irony of saying that in a politics forum)[/sub]

I do agree with you about the referendum. We don't have a good record saying yes to them. I think it needs to be done before she dies for that exact reason.

I don't really care, to be honest. I'm fairly convinced that they bring in slightly more money than they spend and do good charity work and so on, but if they appeared in the news less-to-never, I'd be happier.

Oh, I'm British.

From UK and living in Australia here. I don't care for them.

Don't think they should have any bearing on laws or anything else and I don't think anyone should care about their lives.

I couldn't care less about them really and I'm so sick of hearing about the 'wedding'. Based on what I've heard it's more of a parade and publicity stunt than a wedding. I'm an Aussie by the way

Since they actually make us a profit, work well as non-political ambassadors, the current Queen has been very effective in that role for many decades now, and they're an important part of our culture and history, I'm fairly in support of them. However, I don't care much either way, so I voted 'Don't mind them and from the UK'.

And besides, we tried going Republic once before. Didn't work out so well.

Captcha: History iegalh. Indeed.

I don't have much of a problem, it's mostly a dog and pony show anyway when it comes to royal weddings.
It's a nice thing to have, it means we can be really unplesant to politicians since we already have some to be reverential of, so we don't have to do the same for the head of the government.

I think slightly weirdly that it has a good effect on the hierarchy of the system: means that whichever person has managed to cheat/lie/wheedle/work his way to the top of the political system is placed firmly in a 'serving' role to the country as represented by someone who demonstrably has no real power. It also helps that QE2 keeps herself out of trouble and controversy unlike many of her relations, which brings me to the bad thing about the royals - the extended family who are all also loaded and spend their time being entitled twats/ horrendously out of touch/ paid for by the taxpayer. There are reams of dukes and earls and barons and lords and whatever which do nothing good for social mobility nor the idea of fairness; if the royal status and money were restricted to the immediate family maybe one or two degrees of separation one way or the other I think I'd be happier: the scandinavian countries with monarchs are perhaps the most egalitarian societies in the world possibly for this reason.

I partially agree with Douglas Adams who says that anyone who is capable of getting themselves elected president [of the galaxy] should on no account be allowed to do the job. I think a politician should very obviously serve the country rather than themselves (which seems to be their automatic instinct) and should not be able to get themselves to be the first person of a country. Due to the impossibility of choosing a fair way of ordering a society I think that this arbitrary way is no worse than any and better than most. wow I wrote an essay!

Im from the UK and I think they are a complete waste of time and waste of tax payers money. Also all the hype about this stupid wedding is getting ridiculous!
Seriously if u live in the uk there is really no excuse for being this ill informed read my other posts or at least google it or something to see what they actualy do an the simple fact they are given far far less money than they generate in tourism, plus all the work they do
I'm not ill informed, this is called my opinion, sorry it differs from yours but deal with it

I once asked a British person what the royal family does really the best answer he could come up with was something along the lines about generating tourism, which to me makes them nothing more than a glorified side show. If anybody should get UK tax payer money to be a glorified side show it should be the surviving Monty Python cast.

are living (literally) like royalty on my tax dollars (or pounds, as the case may be).
Although I don't care for them they generate more in tourism than they cost in tax, being British there's far more things to be pissed off about tax than the Royals.

I don't give a toss about them, cause I'm from Australia. I just wish people would shut the hell up about the wedding. D:<

Monarchist Here... as well as a militarist but you have to admit the country has gone downhill since the inception of Parliament but maybe we need to go either hardline Democracy or Hardline Monarchy not in between but hey not my decision!

I honestly don't give a shit about them, they're just people even if they are extremely rich.

I have the same feelings for most celebrities too, just people, no need to worship them.

Oh and im English.

You're not the only one, there is an advert currently on TV telling people to upgrade to Freeview HD to watch the wedding that features Corgis wandering about for an entire minute.

Would be more effective if they said they won't stop playing the advert until everyone was on Freeview HD.

I quite like em, They may be posh and not do much but I guess I'm just a sucker for tradition and that kind of thing.

However the wedding is being way over hyped and its driving me nuts... I don't care to much about that.

I don't mind them to be honest. I think William will make a good King, he doesn't seem to be that much of a prick. Plus they kind of stand as a figurehead.
