Edit: inb4 people start complaining about how I messed up the poll question. I tried to fix it but as usual editing a poll once the topic is created doesn't work. (end edit)

Recently I've been playing Dungeon Defenders - the free Games with Gold game for the latter half of March - with some friends and at first I wasn't really enjoying it. I picked the Huntress as my first character and it just didn't seem like I was doing much at all. Her traps certainly helped, but I'm guessing I was probably playing her wrong because she was just too tedious for my tastes...having to constantly run around and "reload" your traps before they spend off all their charges.

Then I created a Mage and...well...yeah, he's obscenely overpowered. Every game I play now I rank as the MVP. His basic turret is ridiculous, his fire turret is ridiculous, his lightning turret is just obscene, and his deadly-strike turret just isn't even fair (shoots through walls, has ridiculous range, and deals 3.4K damage per hit). So suddenly I'm having a lot of fun with the game!

So that prompted my making of this topic. I wanted to see how many Escapists out there enjoy playing as a class that is obviously overpowered. Like the Demon Hunter in Diablo III. Just pull out the Bat Familiar with the Hatred-regen rune, Shadow Arts with hatred-regen rune, Archery for a passive, the passive that increases your damage against slowed enemies, and just use Rapid Fire with the slow-rune. You basicaly become an infinite ammo laser-turret that mows down everything within sight. Granted, I've only made it up to Nightmare with her, but so far I've had 0 problems soloing everything.

Or another fun class was the "screw it" class I made for Modern Warfare II: assault rifle with a noob-tube, javelin missle launcher, scavenger perk, and danger-close perk. Yeah, that class pissed off a lot of people in MW2...but screw it! :p

Obviously no one likes going up against an obviously over-powered class, but this topic is more specifically about your personal use of over-powered classes. Do you enjoy using them? Do you solely look for an over-powered class in a game once you get it? Do you shy away from a class once it becomes clear that it's blatantly over-powered? Like I rarely use my Demon Hunter in D3 anymore because she sucks the challenge out of the game. I certainly don't use her if I'm playing with my friends because then it just becomes boring for everyone.

I don't mind being overpowered but I'd rather get there myself instead of choosing an "overpowered class".

No. I hate being over powered. I never use overpower weapons/characters/classes or anything else. If i'm playing a competitive game, i'll purposely choose an unpopular character, and giggle with glee everytime i take out someone using something overpowered.

This is especially true in fighting games. There are no bad character, just bad players.

if it's multiplayer, then hell no, not at all, I hate using an obviously broken strategy to win against opponents

single player is fine though, i do whatever i'm having fun with

In the rare multiplayer games I touch, no. I don't like having unfair advantage over the people I'm playing with, even if they might not hesitate to use that advantage against me.

Single player, though? I don't care about 'challenge.' If I'm not playing a game because I like the story, the atmosphere, or something other than the combat, I just find the gameplay so fun that I can't resist (see: Prototype). Give me the most OP class: I will chortle with glee as I crush my enemies beneath my heel and laugh at their ineffective attacks bouncing off my invincible hide. That is how I have fun.

Honestly I think there are both some characters are just an uphill battle in a lot of matchups and so you have to be a much better player to win with such a character in that situation if skill is equal odds are you will lose. That said I love winning with characters people look down on.

I dont mind playing with overpowered characters but really I play characters because I like the character dosent matter to me if they are over or under powered. If something is ludicrously OP though I dont like it I prefer close fought games and dont really like winning or losing by a landslide.

In single player absolutely, I then just get into that much more trouble so instead of it being easy things get far more interesting.

But not in MP, at least not since I got past my "edgy" teen years, you can't have good games without decent people and if you piss in that pool for long enough eventually you will be drinking it yourself.

Single player, every time.
Multi-player coop, depends on teammates skill level, yes if I have to compensate for their sucking, no if they're decent/good.
Multi-player competitive, never, it pisses me off if it even exists.

Soooo... I can't really answer the poll unfortunately.

If I can be a super-powered bad ass than I'm going to be a super-powered bad ass. It's part of why I loved doing the extra missions in Saint's Row 2. This is also my problem with Halo 4...it seemed like there wasn't a single weapon that was actually effective, especially when compared to the Vehicles.

Sure you can, I'd qualify that as "from time to time when the mood suits me". :p

I like the classes that I like, which are stealthy-type classes that have a good mix of long-range and up-close damage abilities.

If that happens to be overpowered, great. If it happens to be underpowered, oh well. My enjoyment of the playstyle is all that matters to me. Whether that's "top tier" playstyle or not is irrelevant to me.

That's why I could never get into competitive Magic the Gathering or tournaments in fighting games. It's all about exploiting the "tiers" and "archetypes" which are objectively determined to be superior. And if the playstyle that I enjoy isn't in the "top tier"? Well, then I just get to eat it.

Ergo, I avoid serious competitions in gaming, so I guess this thread isn't really for me.

They're actually one of the first things that cause me to lose interest in a multiplayer game... that and artificial difficulty through simple scaling of linear numbers. Dungeon Defenders is a perfect example of both, and the conclusion that led me to at about the time my friends and I beat the first campaign was: it's a poorly designed game. So no, I don't really like playing a game containing an overpowered class, much less using one.

On the other hand... in single player games, I don't mind their presence. If the game is particularly difficult, I may even use them... however, I prefer to be underpowered but loaded with clever tricks.

Well thanks for stopping by, I suppose. :p

That said, to go off on a tangent, I feel your pain with the whole Magic thing. I really enjoy the game and my older brother is always wanting me to go to tournaments with him...but it's just not for me. I have an understanding of how the game works and how to build a decent deck, but the simple fact that there's a list "These are the top 5 decks right now, copy them card-for-card or you're going to lose" really puts me off from the competative Magic scene.

Assuming we're talking multiplayer (because who gives a toss about being OP in SP), no, not really. I don't mind making something ridiculously powerful myself, however when I notice something is retardedly overpowered, I just don't play it. For example, if you've played Injustice: Gods Among us, you'll know what I mean when I say Green Lantern. A fast, decent range grab that works both on ground and in the air and ridiculously long range melee openers that lead into combos (as can the grab btw), making it impossible to get close to him, a ton of shooting crap (can shoot from the ground, from the air, has range-specific shots as well) that can keep you away and... yeah.

I'm the kind of guy who spends a lot of time training and trying out my own combos in fighting games. It took me a whole of 10 minutes to figure out how to pretty much dominate with Lantern, but I never actually practiced it, because it felt cheap as fuck. Solomon Grundy is somewhat similar, not that powerful, but has a 1 button combo that starts with a grab (which can be amplified to avoid interruption) that easily deals ~40% damage while giving him an aura to amplify damage or reduce damage taken. Combo is (on PS3) circle->down,down,circle->up,up,circle. Talk about zero skill >.>

Blasting infantry with rockets is also not my type of fun in shooters. Granted, in BF4, I might shoot a rocket at a sniper's perch if it's my only option, but that's easily dodged (and what destructible environments were for anyway)

I prefer playing specialized classes. It's usually the brute warrior (high atk + def) or the silent assassin. Btw, what classes do you consider OP? I yet have to see a warlock in heavy armor that wields the magic longsword in one and the lockpick in the other that didn't get the almighty hex edit buff.
OP classes, by at least my definition, are classes/character builds that are far and away better than other options. Classes/Builds that come with the tag-line "why even bother with anything else"? Classes/Builds that essentially negate the usefulness of any other classes/builds.

Take the Demon Hunter build I described in my OP. It ruined the class for me because literally all I use is one attack: Rapid Fire with the slow rune. There's no point in doing anything else with that character because the build I have is already so ridiculously effective. There's no variety to be had when all I do is hold down my Rapid Fire attack trigger and mow everything down.

It'd be like a warlock whose spells did 10K damage per hit and ignores all armor/resistences while the best any other same-leveled class could do is 3K.

Basically any class/build that gives you an objective, easy-to-be-seen-by-all advantage over everyone/everything else.

In multiplayer? NO.

In single player games? Sure.

If I can min-max to create an overpowered class? Even better.

Yes and no. I guess that I like to play them when they also do things I just like in general. For instance, right now my second favorite jungler in lol is pantheon, who is the among the strongest junglers right now. However, I enjoy playing him mostly because of his pretty entertaining assassin kit, something I don't usually get to play as a jungler so I really enjoyed the opportunity. My other favorite junglers are Wukong, Hecarim, and Udyr, who are not as strong (though Wukong is at least viable at the professional level), who I enjoy due to the nature of their kits (Wukong kills everybody late, Udyr is unkillable, Hecarim is the prettiest pony). I act similarly with single player games, I generally tend towards the strongest build or class that does what I like.

I don't know as I really like just running broken/overpowered tactics, but I do like finding them. I'm afraid I ended up with a pretty munchkin-y character in my last D&D (3.5) campaign, just because I can't bring myself to not search out the best way to optimize my character.
