Poll: Do you listen to music while playing games?

Music is a great way to pass time in real life, but have you ever passed time in something that you are passing time in? That is probably worded very awkardly as I am tired as an 18 wheeler (git it?), so you can just answer the question now.

As for me, I will listen to music in games when things get repetitive, nothing important is happening, or I am going long distances. Certain games have good soundtracks or have an immersion factor that I want to feel, but in a game like, say LittleBigPlanet where everything is in text boxes or GTA 4 where I generally just goof around and don't care what the in game characters say as Niko blows 'em up, I will mute it and listen to some good music to go along with the awesome game.

My problem is that I have the desire to do that, but I can't really think of a game I can play while listening to music without getting killed more often than usual. I tend towards shooters, and I consider being able to hear what's happening in the game pretty important if I want to stay alive (though recently I've mostly been playing games like Fallout where being surprised by a couple super mutants is...unpleasant).
So basically, no, but not for any of the "no" reasons you gave.

Sometimes, but it really depends on the game. I'll really do this when I'm playing a Zelda game and roaming Hyrule. It's perfect for that game, because there's no voice acting and I don't have to pause to hear what they're saying.

Usually. Often it's a really stupid move because I can't hear people coming up on me, but, whatever. I dunno why I do it the whole time, but I do.

Depends on the game, RTSs almost always, most other games music will be on, but I'll pause it whenever talking happens.

I suppose it could be for the experience of hearing Muties? Or immersion of hearing bullets and footsteps around you? I'll add another "No" option.

I usually listen to music when I play FPS, it just seems to help me out. I also listen to music when I play Civ 4, but other strategy games I don't.
When I play RPGs, or horror games, I try to have as little background noise as possible.

occasionally when I'm grinding I will throw on some Radiohead or Led Zeppelin but that's about it...

If the music's awful I turn it off and fire up Winamp.
If there is no music I fire up Winamp.
If there is not enough music I just add it in or... y'know, fire up Winamp. (Best example is Fallout 3, I rarely even hear the original music with all the custom stuff)

I listen to music when playing muti-player(Tf2 for instance) if i don't care wat teammates are saying...but in Campaign i don't at all i want to know wats going on.

Depends on the game.

I often listen to music in racing games, especially street racing games. The right song can add a lot to the experience. Exhibit A:

In other games I generally only listen to music if it fits into the context of the game. Grand Theft Auto IV's user music station, for instance, is a good example. I put together a playlist of songs I think suit Liberty City's atmosphere, Niko's situation, or have some relation to the series in general (the theme from the first game, for instance).

Another example is the FPS-RPG S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The game has ambient music that plays in the background in most areas, and also "live" music played by NPCs around the campfire. In addition, one of the safe areas features a pub (which has a radio that plays music) and a loudspeaker on a tower nearby (which also plays music). I modded the game by adding some songs to the game to play in the pub and on the loudspeaker.

I do it sometimes, if the game music isn't up to scratch or I just really want to listen to something else. MJ plus Crysis Warhead on hard or Delta equals awesomeness.

When I'm playing FPS games like Day of Defeat or Counter Strike, I usually turn on some Gears of Wars soundtracks while I'm playing to make every moment more intense and epic.

Sometimes I mute the music and listen to my own stuff, actually I'm gonna do that now.

Rarely there are times I get tired of hearing the back ground music, so I will turn of the music (not the sounds and voices, if that's possible) and play random shit from my iPod.
