No i don't listen to music while playing games, i like to be immersed and i never really have the urge to do so, though i once listened to knights of cydonia while playing red dead redemption.

Listen to the game music. Even then, only if it's part of immersion. But it can get a bit repetitive.

Games like L4D need your ears sharp, so it breaks immersion there. Another game that still feels right without music is ME.

I can't really imagine playing a slow paced C&C game without some really cool music, though.

Questing or grinding in MMOs tends not to require as much focus as, say, Call of Duty or Starcraft 2 so that's when I tend to put on some tunes.

I say tunes, it's usually some form of death metal.

Protip: Don't blast Screamo whilst playing Mass Effect (No subs and then complain you don't know what's going on. I will introduce you to the blue goldfish.

Playing epic music in the background pretty much got me through borderlands and fallout 3, otherwise the grinding probably would have driven me insane. Having your own music is guaranteed to be better than listening to the games music, I think it makes the game much more personal and intense. Also, OCremix songs whilst playing COD make it so much better! I bet somewhere a music engineer is crying to himself.

Some games yes, Some games no. But never during cutscenes
In a game like Borderlands, Fallout 3 and Prototype I will listen to my own music as I mainly just piss about and do my own thing and the current soundtrack isn't really that great so I'll make do with my own.
But in a game like Metro 2033, BioShock and Left 4 Dead I won't listen to music as It would ruin the atmosphere which really adds to the fun of these games, and I may miss some verbal tics of what is about to eat me around the next corner
However there are games like Uncharted, Transformers: War for Cybertron and God of War where the music in the game itself is too awesome to miss.

When the soundtrack isn't good enough for me, I put my own. In games like Final Fantasy, I get tired of the music going on the entire time, just looping and looping, digging into my skull and scratching at my brain, so I put my own music after I feel the repetitiveness of it.
Or when games just don't have an interesting enough story (reminds me of Gears of War; I had Bolt Thrower blasting while playing it).

I have my own music if I play MMOs or RTS games, where I don't need to be listening for people trying to sneak up on me.

Actually I play my own music for horror games as well. This one in particular.

Try Dead Space with this on. You'll never stop laughing.
This = WIN

OT: Well I would listen to music while I'm playing something like flower, so instead of it being beautiful or atmospheric, I can make it anything I want it, like scary:

or funny:

or maybe just strange:

but I usually stick to the ingame sound because it is just so burrifaw :')

That would just be a totally new level of epicness.

As for me, I sometimes listen to music when gaming, especially if the in-game sound is fairly bland.

Yeah I do while playing Borderlands. Not enough music to keep things going. Also, Oblivion...

Just the games where the background music is a bit bland and doesn't seem to repeat. The nice thing about the 360 is that it stops the music during videos so you don't miss important things. Not that there is a lot of story in Borderlands....

Depends on, when i can, I do. When I play ps3 games i don't because most of the times it's not prohibited.
