Love them, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series with the A-Life engine is the king of random encounters.

Depends if we're talking about a JRPG or a WRPG.

I hate them in JRPGs - mostly because of the fucking cinematic woosh woosh fite fite victory pose loading screen - but I love them in WRPGs because they tend to be more dynamic and add to the atmosphere.

I hate them.

I love the Pokemon games and I was indifferent to the random encounters in the grass but those caves bring back bad memories.

I prefer if the monsters were visible and avoidable so I don't run into 50 million zubats and I don't have to fight enemies way below my level when I return to an area. Like Persona 4 did, you don't know what you'll be fighting if you attack the shadows but you could avoid them completely if you wanted to and they were big or small according to how difficult they were. I remember playing one game that had monsters visible that ran away from you if you were a much higher level in them and I really liked that. I think it might have been DQM: Joker but I could be mistaken.
Actually the game you're talking about is probably Earthbound, for the SNES. It also let you insta-kill install them and reap the rewards.

I don't mind them myself. Especially when I got some new equipment or abilities and I need something to test it on.

Although I kinda prefer how they handle encounters in more recent games, in which you can actually see the enemies ahead of you.

They're annoying as hell. There are few things more irritating in a game than trying to solve a particular dungeon puzzle while getting constantly interrupted by enemies.

They are just the most awful lazy avoidance of design you find in gaming today, apart from QTEs obviously.
Yes there used to be a reason for it, that being your 5 sprites taking all the memory and everything else had to be cut down to the simplest codes, but that problem is long gone now it's only a question of does the dev team do good level design or take a nap instead.

If you mean those invisible until you trip them off one then no.

Visible, occurring when on the loading map (with the caveat of occurring rarely) and most western ones are fine by me.

Well it depends. If you mean as in Pokemon walky through grass random encounters, HELL NO! But if you mean actual random encounters like Skyrim, Fallout, ArmA, Payday, STALKER and more, then yes, I freaking love them!

I wish you could enable/disable random encounters across all games. Like when you play Pokemon and want to level your pet army for a Gym Leader battle, turn it on and go running through a cave or field of grass. Then when you decide you're strong enough, you can disable it and get to where you need to be without snapping the handheld in half.

I'd feel if I CHOOSE to have these encounters I'd feel more kindly towards them than when it constantly interrupts my journey to the point of handheld-snapping frustration.

Of course the ultimate reward will go to people who keep in on. But if you're like me and would rather go forward without being teleported into a pocket dimension for every three seconds of gameplay, I couldn't care less.

I actually like random encounters a lot, especially if you can get items that control encounter rates later on. I dislike the way FFXIII and XIII-2 have been doing it, because the way you move about and come into contact with the monsters feel so plastic and fake. On the other hand, I really enjoyed how FFXII did it which didn't have any of those fake problems. If you could think of a way to adapt that to a turn based system (and problem which Wasteland 2 of all games look to have solved) that could be a lot of fun.

My main problems with random encounters are the load times to get to and from the battle plane and it's a little less immersion building than having the monsters there, living and breathing in your world. But then most RPG battle systems are pretty abstract anyway

I am rather indifferent, though random encounters force me to actually fight and stay at a decent level through out the game, normally I avoid enemies if I can see them. random encounters all keeps me on my toes and well prepared for any situation.

it might make more sense if random encounter rate was based on you level rather than a fixed percentage chance of getting attacked every 5 seconds you move in any direction but as it is getting jumped by a level 5 mob when the attack animation takes longer than the fight is fucking annoying

Generally? No.
When my Charmander is on 5 HP, my last repel has run out and I'm charging through a long cave section praying I can escape from the endless onslaught of Zubats? HELL FUCKING YES I MIND.

I like random encounters and wish they would put more of them in games...

I want more random encounters like FF7 and less the shiny bollocks of FF13. In FF7 you can encounter anything from a particular zone at any time whilst being there so you build your character as a good all-rounder that can deal with anything that jumps out. In FF13 you specifically design your party to beat specific types of enemy as you meet them on-screen. This allows players more freedom to customise things as they want it but really what it does is force people to powergame in such a way that punishes those who won't go down that route. Worse still, it actually slows the game down, more than random encounters ever did, and totally ruins the atmosphere.

Fuck the modern braindead system for unimaginative children that we have had forced upon us :p

Not all RPGs use it, so I don't mind. Really, I like it sometimes it can come as a challenge, such as wandering around and running into a rather high level enemy, you feel a sense of urgency and challenge. I mean really, if you can see what enemies you're going to battle, what are you going to do? Charge straight at the big enemy? Or try to sneak by it never challenging yourself? Most people are going to just walk by it. I don't know, sometimes I just enjoy when my games punish me, makes me feel like a badass when my party is all on low health and yet I still defeated that Malboro.

They're not the worst thing in the world, but I'm glad they're dying out.
I much prefer the way games like Final Fantasy XIII and Tales of Graces do it, in that there are enemies wondering around the field that you can go and give a nudge if you're up for a fight. It stops you being forced into fights you don't want to do, be it because they're too easy or because things are rough and your party's in no shape for a fight, but then if you do still want to fight everything and anything the option's still there.
