sometimes, it depends, for example, in Fallout 3, I'm a hot brunette with shoulder-length hair but in Saints Row 1, my guy looked like an older version of me if I'd had my skull crushed in various ways, now in Saints Row 2 I'm a muscly african-american with blonde hair which sort of matches mine.

As for my Xbox Live avatar, when the NXE first came out, I modeled my avatar as close to me as I possibly could but gave myself some nice shades and sweet shorts but now I've got green hair and a bunch of stuff I wouldn't be seen dead in.

I tend to make an "improved" version of me, i.e., vaugeley similar appearance, but much more handsome, and usually going through goody to-shoes till an NPC pisses me off, and I become an assassin

When I make a character, in any game that has customization. I brainstorm think of a personality for said character and a back story and then make that character look appropriate to that story and personality. Be it a male or female character.

No, because I'm ugly and stupid and if any of these game situations were real, I'd inevitably scare off any potential love interests and ruin everything.

Which, thinking about it, would make for a hilarious game.

Only in decisions. I'm useless at using creation tools so I just pick the default setting that looks coolest.

I make my character look as awesome as possible (so not like me at all). I make my character act like me if I was him (physically) because in a fight I would run and hide and pray(even though I'm an atheist but hey if it works yay). I do think I'm braver in combat then I would be in real live except in games like borderlands and crackdown 2 (demo)(because I would be a total bad-ass in those cases) but I guess they aren't the kind of games your talking about.

As close as I can for both, but long curly hair makes it hard cause most games are too lazy to add it :p

I usually have some kind of concept behind my character and adjust their looks, decisions and behavior accordingly. My characters never have anything to do with who I am.

I usually try to make the character look vaguel like me.

I usually play the game first time through as the closest I can get to the villian of the story all the way through.

Exceptions being one character in Fallout 3 who I couldn't bring myself to dislike even in my evil playthrough.

Moira. I blew up Megaton, and went back. I told her I'd blown it up, she asked why?
My character: "Who needs a reason, explosions are pretty!"
Moira: "Yeah, they are, aren't they?"
Me: "Moira is MADE OF WIN! She's earned her exception from my wrath."

I ended up doing the whole Wasteland Survival guide, with a few key sections filled with misinformation to cause havoc for those following its advice.

Usually I base my characters on myself, with of course, a little jazzing up, for want of a less stupid term. My decisions in games are always modelled on what i think i'd do, isn't that almost the point of being given such decisions?

I only keep it to decisions. Why make them look like me? The game would shatter from awesomeness after all.

I never try to make my character look like myself. If I try to, my character is going to look terrible.

On my first playthrough, I usually play as an evil person.
On my second playthrough, I usually play as a good person.
My third playthrough, (If I liked the game enough to play through a third time) I play as me making decisions that I would make.

I don't usually model facial features very heavily. But hair style/color, eye color and skin tone, I will sometimes try to model a character after myself. And my first playthrough with any RPG is what I would do, even without a character that looks like me. In fact, in Dragon Age, the character that made all the choices I would've, was a redheaded female elf. I'm none of those things.

I tend to model my characters (particularly in ME) on myself, and I make decisions on the first run-through that I think I myself would make in those situations. I sometimes *try* to play it again making the opposite decisions, but tend to go back to my usual decisions again :p

I just see how far into the realms of inhumanity i can stretch the character by sliding the sliders to ridiclous locations.

I tried doing that with a female Shepard in the first Mass Effect, i.e. randomly increasing the sliders to their extremities in order to make the ugliest Shepard possible, and she ended up looking like Eddie Izzard... the resemblance was uncanny.

On my first playthrough I try to make my character look like me as best I can, but I also usually make him look like a cooler version of me. For the decisions I try to make them close to what I would choose. After my first playthrough though I make up random characters and make up the decisions as I go.

I always try to make the character based on me or how i would view myself in the game-world, both lookswise and in making decisions. I value the immersion. I like to think it's me who is the actual protagonist. If i wanted a story revolving around someone else, i'd play an RPG where the protagonists are already set and pre-determined. I create a character to tellmy story. I play RPGs like Final Fantasy to experience their story. There is a difference, but i can't be bothered to explain it right now.
