I have guns for recreation and protection. Also, I believe anyone who calls himself a free man is obligated to provide for his own and his community's defense.

depends, if its a pistol, it might scare the burglar away, or they can call your bluff, now if its a shot gun, all you need to do is rack it and the burglar(s) will take off like a bat out of hell. Nice little trick my buddies in the police academy told me :D

Actually its a crappy little babies first hunting rifle. Maybe I should try that shotgun trick though.

Shooting someone who walks into your house or yard is illegal, even in Texas).
Sorry but no its NOT illegal. Self defense. If they are running away off your property and you shoot them yes you can get in trouble. You CAN use deadly force if someone breaks into your house. By doing that they are already threatening you.
A bit over the top. He said 'walk into your house or yard.' I mean, he could be mentally deranged, not dangerous. Not everyone is out to get you. I've never had a problem with anyone threatening me, nor anyone I have ever known. I see no point in owning a gun. It seems odd to me. The reason for self defence would be the same for swimming in chainmail and a harpoon gun due to sharks in the water, or carrying a case of antidotes because of poisonous snakes and spiders.
I disagree. I have never needed my fire extinguisher, but I don't regret having it. I once needed a firearm, and I regret not having it.

Well, this thread descended into the pit of flame war hell almost as quickly as I expected.

The OP got what the asked for with this one, with those inflamatory replies attempting to shove his beliefs down the throats of those unwittingly lured into his trap. Hunting an animal in its natural environment is cruel, yet keeping an animal caged for its entire life and denying it freedom isn't? If you truly believe this, I hope you get the chance to rot in a cage. Also, its entirely possible to shoot a person without killing them. Actually, its really quite hard to kill a person with a single shot, depending on weapon type, range and angle/speed at which the target is moving.

Yet we found someone even worse than the OP! We have PurpleRain here to tell the whole world about how terrible guns are, how useless they are to protect yourself and why they are the root of all evil. The reaction to Port Arthur was a complete knee jerk from our (at the time) Liberal goverment. It had little affect on gun related crimes, they have always been rare here, and have continued to be.

For the record, I'm Australian, I own a crossbow and a compound bow, and hold a gun licence and go hunting with my grandfather, using his guns. I shoot Kangaroos, Pigs, foxes and rabbits. I rarely eat anything I shoot, although we usually feed it to the hunting dogs.

I would shoot an attacker without a second thought. Go cry about it hippies.

Firstly, it's not legal for me, but I would have no use for it anyway, as I am a pacifist and don't hunt or anything like that, but I have done target shooting with air rifles before.

Where do Europeans get the idea that Americans cling to a dusty old piece of paper called The Constitution? We don't, and it's not. The Constitution is a living document which can and has been changed over the years to reflect the needs of society. And we don't cling to it- citizens might because we lament losing it, but it is widely ignored by politicians. It's anything but dusty, and the only thing Americans need to do with the Constitution is start paying more attention to it. I don't think Europeans realize what the Constitution is for, and what it does and doesn't do.

How can you accuse Americans of being brainwashed while at the same time supporting movements with no purpose except expansion of the state? Is safety and material wealth really the highest value?

The oath that our military swears to uphold the constitution means nothing. Just look at the Civil War. The army supported Lincoln, and you'd be pressed to think of an Article he didn't shatter. And that is exactly why we need to remain armed. While it's true the Founding Fathers could not have foreseen modern weapons like tanks, that only makes the need to bear arms all the more pressing. Go to South Vietnam and tell them that small arms can't win.

I wish people would stop trying to subvert the meaning of the 2nd Amendment. It's true meaning, unlike its merits, is not up for debate. Its legal precedence, the intention of its authors, and basis in English Common Law are unquestionable.

When defense is strong enough that offense is not worth attempting, there is peace and freedom.

Just like I want people who don't want power over others to be the ones in public office, I want people who hate initiation of force to be the ones most heavily armed. I'm in a position to arm myself, so I will.

Go shooting at the range, I'm pretty accurate even on quick shots, most end up somewhere between the eyes or in the heart.
It's the Jaguar, the Brazilian make of a 9mm Baretta, a bit easier to open the chamber.

No, I do not hunt simply to mount a nice buck's head on my wall, that's stupid and wasteful.
So is hunting when theres plenty of food avalible. I ve seen how they are brought up.Didn't affect me one tinney bit. It still tastes Oh so good
So it's "wasteful" for me to hunt an animal that naturally reproduces even if I'm doing so in a sustainable and responsible manner? Come live in Northern Canada for a while and see what happens to the bear population when they cancel one of the hunts...

Could scare someone with it?

If I was allowed a gun I use hollow points for that little extra.

there is something appealing about guns to me. i have been hunting birds with dogs and horses (i am english can you tell) and even though i know guns are designed PRIMARILY to kill i still always enjoy going shooting. Also i find them an amazing feat of engineering and worth owning just for that. i don't own a gun but i would if i could afford 1. Sport and Fun is the game here. if you shoot some one you should be locked up, for protection or not.

Nope, and I wouldn't want one, either.
I've got a bunch of knives and scalpels, though.
