So i noticed over the years than humans usually seem to be the most popular race in mmorpgs and i always kinda wondered...why? i mean i can see the appeal of playing as human. its a fantasy or sci-fi setting and you want to imagine yourself in that setting (i assume thats why people would play a human anyway). but while im sure many people like doing that, i would think at least as many people would want to use video games as a way of pretending to be someone (or something) completely different. for me personally, i spend my whole life as a human, so when i escape into a video game world, i want to be something completely different. in fact im always a little sad when i play a fantasy or sci-fi game and have to be a human. i know the whole humans being respected as a species thing is kind of an important part of mass effect (the first one, at least), but i really wanted to be able to play as an alien.

so heres my question. when you play an mmo (or any game that lets you choose your race), do you usually play as human? if so, why? and for those of you who, like me, prefer to play as anything but human, why do you tend to avoid playing as human?

I alternate, for MMOs and singleplayer RPGs. I'll usually go for a human character first, then when I've familiarised myself with the universe I'll dive into something more risqué/green. It depends on the setting too though, in Skyrim I'll only do the main questline if I'm playing a Nord because they seem to fit better in my mind - Skyrim is Nord country, all the Thu'um masters seem to be Nords and there's the trip to Sovngarde which is exclusively Nords too. Goes both ways (TOR I only ever played aliens) but that's why I tend to go for human characters in some games.

I almost never play human. Humans are just boring, I see them everywhere. I like beast races the most, preferably fuzzy ones because d'aaaww it's fuzzy! If I'm gonna spend the game looking at my avatar I don't want to look at some skinbag when I could be looking at a kitty.

I only like playing human if I can make a bishounen or a relatable girl (aka not a sex doll), and either of those cases are rare.

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

i actually fine overly heroic and brave humans a lot of fun to play in some games specifically because they are not what i see everywhere and besides who hasn't played at being a guy "in days of old" with a sword at least once ?.

in fact in my case the more hugely cheezly heroic (or cartoon evil) the better sometimes :p
Yes, but my opinions are better than your opinions therefore I'm right. Deal with it : )

Depends how well they've designed the human female models. If they're nice, then that's what I play.

But in GW2 I decided to roll with a cute little Asura for a change:

sci fi is the only type of game that i would ever consider not playing a human (turians and salarians ftw!) otherwise in all fantasy settings i prefer to be human, i've tried playing other races but it always takes me right out of the atmosphere for some reason.

as you mentioned, i like to project myself into the world, making choices I WOULD make were i in the spot, and one of those is being human. (not that i hate elves/dwarves/etc..just prefer to be myself is all)

I dont play MMO but whenever the option is presented I choose non-human, for me its: how many games are you a human killing aliens/monsters/etc? I like it to be the other way round once in a while XD

though humans are normally the 'jack-of-all-trades' so sometimes its easyer to familiarise with one then pick the non-human who's strengths suit your playstyle

I don't play many MMOs but when I do, I stay the Hell away from the Human races. I am a human after all so why would I want to play a game as a human if I don't have to? That's one of the reasons I hated DA2 and it's one of the things that disappointed me about Mass Effect (though it could be remedied in another hypothetical ME-RPG).
