Normally when I see the (rather silly) Evony ads, I ignore them. But just now, seeing them for the bazillionth time, I wondered about their supposed millions of players. Who are these people? Is anyone of you one of these people? Are browser-based games actually played at all? And does an ad campaign like Evony's strike any interest?

Well, I suppose Runescape counts as browser-based, but it doesn't share that much in common with other browser-based games nowadays. It's getting complex enough that it's more like a client-based MMO than a simple browser-based game.

Yes I play an online card game called: Urban Rivals.
Thank you kindly for this, just signed up and it looks pretty cool. Just need to work out how it works now ^.^

OT: I have in the past played browser games, I've played the likes of travian and heroes of might and magic. They all play pretty similar to each other, fun for a short while but get quite repetative after a while. Some fun can be had out of them though if you don't take them seriously.

Never played envoy though, mainly due to the fact that the adverts for it made it look like a soft porn game >.>

I once spent a lot of time playing dice wars (http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/dice/dice.html).

I have no idea why.

But I've never played one of those heavily advertised social media / mmo type games

Billy vs Snakeman is a pretty fun game. It's all silly and filled with anime-references. I play it everyday.

I've played Travian for a few month. I quit when I started waking up at night with the feeling that I was about to be attacked - just in time to move all my precious men away. Man, it made you paranoid. Couldnt sleep for more than a couple hours if you wanted to be a big fish!

I play countless flash games, which got me to make an account on Kongregate.
I also play Echo Bazaar, one of the greatest browser-based mumorpuger-style games set in a post-apocalyptic Fallen London where you can't 'really' die.

Yes, I've been playing browser games for several years. If you want anything closely resembling an MMO strategy game, you pretty much have to turn to browser games. I've tried more than 100 games and stuck with a couple that I think are the best. Those are Grepolis (in the MMO strategy genre) and Dragon's Call (in the MMORPG genre). I also recently started playing Empires and Allies in the, well, Zynga genre, and it's pretty fun.

Only Happy Wheels, because no other game features a father and his son on a bike, cycling towards their inneviteble deaths.

If you haven't played Happy Wheels you haven't lived.

I also played Runescape once, I found it alright but I got bored rather quickly.

Not only do I play them, I design/make them for a living.

But I already played those kind of games long before I started working for the company.
Though I am a bit surprised that the poll has so high percentage yes votes.

I always thought that real gamers don?t really liked these kind of game (though we do develop some hard and long games for this group).
Guess I?ll keep following this thread because it would be interesting for me to see how many others click yes on the poll

I used to play Pardus, Stargatewars (I think it had to change it's name recently), Evony, quite a few similar to that.

The only one I've stuck with though is Kingdom of Loathing. An adventurer is you!

I was recently (in the past day or two) thinking of starting into Runescape. The whole "free players have 1/3 of the game world open" killed it. Completely understandable (they need to make money) but not something I could live with.
