Gameplay and storylines, mostly. The world and lore are interesting, but I always feel like they fumble the presentation. I can get into the direct storyline, but not much outside of it, no matter how hard I try.

I hate the gameplay in skyrim. I love the world but I wish I could walk more than two steps without having to fight wolves/bears/bandits. Just as soon as I'm about to lose myself in the nature walk simulator I have to deal with the terrible clunky slow combat controls. Not to mention dragon always attack whenever it's the most inconvenient. If I'm exploring and willing to fight I never encounter any or they just taught me by flying in circles above my head. Then when I'm on a quest they love to spawn right when I leave a dungeon and have too much loot to run. The writing is also meh, generic fantasy. You don't really have much diversity in Skyrim either: noble, gruff barbarian, stuffy mage, beggar, and the one guy who's actually different.

In any game the world of lore and huge story means dedication to a game that's why halo mass effect, uncharted and skyrim have been such huge successes because they have created worlds where there is a huge amount of discovery.

Its also why I have stopped playing cod because even though the game play is good the story to so predictable and over the top there is no reason to be truly invested.

Gameplay. TES lore has always been it's weak spot for me (although the enviroment was quite nice.)

The mods and only the mods. Vanilla Skyrim is really overwhelmingly meh. Thats why I did not even look at it for a while until at least some patches and a whole fuckload of mods came out.

Also you claimed you explained the differences between "hardcore" and "casual". I hope you explained to him that the only people who use the terms "hardcore" and "casual" are collectively known as "cunts".

Personally, I don't see how anyone can manage to play a TES game for the mechanics. The combat is getting better but the gameplay is utter tripe and a buggy, unbalanced, easily exploitable mess.

A mixture of both.
I play because i love the discovery... I love exploring the world and carving my own path through it. The gameplay and the world need to be good for this, and luckily the modding community fixes just about any problems i have with either side.

Both, although I have to admit it's the world and lore that keeps pulling me back in. I can't get enough of that world. Bethesda did something amazing with this one. They created a virtual drug.
