First off I know that "Bit" in this case is in reference to graphical capabilities. But I'm thinking of the music from games that were for systems with 8 or 16-bit graphics. Here are some examples (you'll have to excuse my lack of 8-bit game music knowledge outside the NES).

It's a hard choice for me but I'd say 8-bit as they had less to work with and thus had to be more innovative. So which do you like better?

I think it's a lot easier to screw up 8-bit music if the tune isn't good, which is why I prefer 16-bit. The song is still pretty uncluttered but there's a bit of leeway if a certain track sucks.

16-bit for me.

Here's a few of my favorites:

Koji Kondo can do heavy metal...

...who knew?

Pure magical Fire Emblem music.

Genius. Makes you feel like you're underwater.

Two words, BAD ASS!!!

Any Tales fan should recognize this piece.

I prefer this version:

Only because it contains the word "meow" as a musical beat. :3

Has to be 16-bit for me, mainly due to the Sonic The Hedgehog games

I'd have to say 8-bit. 16-bit may have been technically better, but most games seem to be trying to emulate a realistic sound and falling far short of it. 8-bit had a unique style of its own.

Its all MIDI ... the instrument sets are whats different, and they are usually assigned bit sets. They didn't stop using MIDI based music in mainstream until 88-89. As for anything MIDI, its just a format, in most cases composed on piano keyboards. But being MIDI it could be damn near anything. The songs are what matters to me. It can go either way depending on the artist.

Hah, I find it funny that like me most of the games you reference from the SNES are JRPGs. Not that it's a bad thing, it was the golden age of JRPGs *nostalgic sigh*. But when I was making lists of 16 and 8-bit music 9/10 of the 16-bit stuff were JRPGs.

Let's not forget that FFIV had some fan-frickin'-tastic music to accompany it, such as my personal favorite from that game:

Oops, wrong video. :p

Here's the original music:

I do like both, but for me the music is judged game to game, as a whole though, i do prefer 16bit game music, though i think this is mostly due to the fact it is what i've had the most exposure to.

yeah .... >.> there where a lot of good choice in JRPGs back in the day, unlike now where only 1 or 2 publisher make good ones still. and i had to show restraint, other wise the list would be 10 times longer at least

16 bit mainly for because it has that that 8-bit feel but is more robust. But video-game music in general has to go to orchestral.

1 bit.
I only like 1 bit.

The one AND ONLY ONE sound of room tone will keep me occupied while I stare at a giant pixel.
