I struggle to sleep if there's an external stimulus because I end up being too distracted and tempted to interact with it. However, if it's the right kind of stimulus, I can fall asleep just as easily. However, I usually prefer pitch black in absolute quietness.

I sleep with a fan on for white noise. I can sleep without it, but I prefer the sound.

I listen to music when I sleep. I learned a long time ago that I'm at my worst emotionally when trying to go to sleep by itself.

I always have to have a fan going, and if someone shuts it off i wake up and have a horrible time sleeping until its back on. A tv works also I've found.

Strangely though the best time I remember sleeping was my roommate was playing bioshock in the front room and I slept for hours while he played.

Interestingly enough, I do this too. It's how I always know if the power goes out.

Not now, but I have fond memories of falling asleep in restaurants to the sounds of clattering silverware and the murmur of voices when I was younger.

Can't sleep with it. While that stuff actually makes me tired, I can't fall asleep until the song or tv show or whatever finishes.

I'm a firefighter/EMT and when I work I sleep at my station. When I'm there I like to listen to my ipod. I have to keep it really low so I can hear my pager go off if there is a call, but I enjoy listening to Opeth, Katatonia, ect while sleeping at work.

A fan, either normal style or from my laptop cooler pad. Absolute silence tends to make me more aware of my surroundings as I find myself trying to listen for things. Darkness isn't a problem but I severely dislike sleeping with the bedroom door open or window blinds anything but totally shut. The idea of being silently watched creeps me right out.

I can sleep, but not easily, without something in the background.

as someone already said, comedy shows on tv are really good for that.
i tend to just put on a stand up comedy dvd, put my tv onto sleep timer and lie there.

& when i can't do that, i use my iPod to play rain noises through my speakers, because it relaxes me so much.

this will sound wierd, but here goes:

i didn't do it, nor did it occour to me to go to bed with noise (light is excluded here, personally i cant sleep with a bright light, but a low one is doable) until i watched, and was traumatized by, freddy vs. jason (i had a sheltered childhood) and to help me get over that, my mom introduced me to the idea of music at bedtime. i used to not be able to sleep without it, but ive since gotten over that, though i still prefer it. the TV, some music, whatever. it all helps.

The darker the room, the better; I need noise stimilus at all times in my room to not freak out. Specifically, I'm so used to having my little air cleaner on that if it's not, I am acutely aware of the lack of noise. Without it, I can't sleep, I can't study, I can't do much of anything until I turn it back on.

I never get to sleep if there's still noise. But I usually spend about 10-60 minutes watching videos or listening to music on my iPod before I try to get to sleep.

I don't, or at least try very hard not to.

Mainly because I don't want to become dependent on it to fall asleep.
