Totally depends on the way it's presented and used in the games. So I went with Both. First Person does feel a little repetitive at times because there isn't much else besides FPS in the genre. 3rd person on the other hand provides a multitude of different game styles to enjoy. From the over the shoulder view point of GoW and Resident Evil 5 to the hack and slashy craziness of Bayonetta/Devil May Cry/God of War ect. But then again First Person does allow a degree more immersion but again it all depends on execution.

I much prefer 3rd person view, I don't need FP perspective to feel immersed and I suck in FP, I feel paranoid cos I feel like I have tunnel vision, wide tunnel vision but nevertheless tunnel vision. I don't have my other senses to rely on in games, you know when you 'just know', someone is behind you even if they didn't make a noise. I don't feel attached to the character in the game either, I want to see them.
I'd like to be better at FP as I feel I am missing some good games though.

I prefer third person shooters by a wide margin. There are a number of reasons for this. The first is that I like to see the character I am playing as, and I like to have the option to unlock more costumes and whatnot. Dead Space was an awesome game in this regard, as you upgraded your suit multiple times over the course of the story. I also feel that third person shooters are more prone to variety in general than first person shooters which have remained largely unchanged in terms of gameplay since Doom put them on the map.

Holy shit, that's a hecka close poll. 17 for FPS, 16 for TPS, and 18 for Both.

I like both, but I voted for TPS because it's so much more versatile. Human eyes have more than 180 degrees' worth of FOV, but FPS games horribly reduce this to around 90-120, depending on the game. You can't simulate peripheral vision and natural eyeball vision in a game, so I prefer TPS when you can see a bit around you. It's also good to know what your character is like, and not have rolls that fuck up the camera.

I have the exact opposite opinion here. I felt like the 3rd person in Deadspace made combat unintuitive and consequently frustrating. I felt like when I died I was dying because I couldn't get the controls to react the way that I wanted them to, rather than a result of my doing something stupid.

Or maybe I just suck.

First person for me.

I like third person for action games; games like Batman:AA and GTA and such. I much prefer first person for shooters though.

I preffer Third person almost exclusively.

1. Better field of view.

2. Allows me to relate to the character better.

3. Wider potential array of moves. First person is quite limiting in what your character can do.

4. Better sense of immersion.

Overall, I find First person to be limiting and primitive. I do, however, applaud games trying to do something new with it, like Mirror's Edge, but for the most part, First Person is stagnating and has been for a decade...

...what?

OT: I prefer third, it allows you to see more of your environment and plan accordingly. Plus, you know exactly where your character if you prefer the stealthy option.

I prefer the third person camera angle even though the majority of my favorite games are in first person. The third person camera gives a larger field of view and allows me to check my back sides, instead of having tunnel vision. I also appreciate the extra work by the developers making an extra model that lets me show off a character, pose them and understand them better. Some developers tend to like faceless cipher characters believing them to increase immersion, but I never have any doubts I'm playing a video game. I am not the Master Chief or Gordon Freeman. I am controlling them. Sometimes I'm a director guiding the avatar, sometimes I'm an actor playing a role. In this instance third person usually takes the player back to be bolder with characterization. This helps me, I would think Max Payne wouldn't shoot an unarmed man in the back, even if he is working for the bad guys and will alert me. Whereas I can also believe 47 will totally strangle the poor waiter so he can dress in his clothes to poison soup to a table. Third person games also usually have more varied combat and movement. It's weird fighting melee in first person and most of the time you are repeating animations and motions. When playing multiplayer on a FPS it really demonstrates how limited movement is. Everyone looks like they're shuffling while stuffed inside a refrigerator box [http://designreboot.blogspot.com/search/label/refrigerator%20box] while wearing a back brace.

So overall I see more, it looks prettier, I get to know the characters better, it encourages developers to be more creative with lead roles, it is better for varied combat and animations typically look better.

this. holy crap it bugs the hell out of me not having my peripharels!!! i watch so many game play videos and im like "WOW there was a guy RIGHT there, but due to massive tunnel vision i ran right by him" (fps of course), which i dont hate fps, i just like having my peripharels and like being able to see where i am jumping from and usually i have cool armor on and whatnot, so its much better to see myself, i have NO NO NO NO problem at all with immersion, if its a good game, then its a good game, being in third person does not take away from this not one bit

dont get me wrong, there are some excellent games and they do great in fps, but overall i love third person much more, i get a much more enjoying feeling and satisfaction out of it

(this is the exact reason why im so pumped for socom 4)

It depends for me, I like 1st person for most of my shooters though there is the occasional 3rd person shooter I love (RE4). I don't mind 3rd person and do enjoy it sometimes, but if it's 3rd person and I can't control the camera (GoW, Dante's) I tend to dislike the 3rd person perspective as I miss a lot of what I want to see while hacking and slashing or scavenging.

I like both.

But im partial to First person for shooter games, and third person for RPG games (Medieval Genre, swinging swords seems alot better in 3rd person :D).

Third. There has been exactly two first person games I've played and enjoyed: Metroid Prime 3 and Oblivion.
I hate the detached feeling perspective (Look slightly down and what part of your body do you see. Oh, just hands still) and the fact that I can't see my character.

Give me third person and everything all the time.
