I like for the OVERALL plot to be resolved, but a few things to be left open. I don't want those things to be left open for sequels though, just for speculation and fun.

Closed for sure. If there are no more books in that series I like leaving it believing that their lives have for the most part settled down and the exciting part of their lives have reached a conclusion. An example of a closed ending is Harry Potter, however that epiloque was horrible so doesn't exactly prove my point now does it...

Closed, or at least ended. I mean, some stories end with a distinct sense of optimism (or pessimism), which is the author tacitly giving you an idea about how it ended.

I hate cliffhangers though. They're usually just a cheap way to get readers to talk about the book more.
