I have always wondered what kind of player mode people preferred the most.

For me, I enjoy single player mode the most. I like playing a game by myself because all it takes it one person to screw up everything you were trying to accomplish. If a games wants to sell me on its multi-player capabilities, it has to stand out to me in single player mode first. I do not mind co-op mode though.

What are your thoughts?

Eh, usually single player. Multiplayer with friends, otherwise internet trash tend to ruin the experience.

Single-player because it is what the game should really be what the game is about. Multi-player should only be a way to extend the enjoyment of the game, not the premise of the game.(unless it is THE ONLY premise of the game-i.e. TF2, Counter-Strike)

Holy shit another one of these?

Anyway, Single player for me most of the time. I play games to get engrossed in the story and characters. Yay Escapism!

It depends on the genre, and the individual game. For example, F.E.A.R. has great singleplayer, but the multiplayer wasn't my cup of tea. It had some good ideas, but they were buried under a big pile of boring. Games like Quake 3, Battlefield 2, and TF2, however, are some of my favorite games, but I tend to avoid the singleplayer modes. In other genres, it depends -- fighting games are almost always better as multiplayer afffairs, while I prefer my RPGs to be singleplayer, unless I'm playing a tabletop game.

TL;DR -- a big fat "it depends."

I play video games with friends but they tend to be just because we don't have anything else to do. I play single player a lot because I actually really enjoy it more than crap TV or similar.

Well, single-player.

I don't mind multiplayer, but only when I'm playing against my friends in the same room.

Online multiplayer? Blah. If I can't reach over and smack someone for a cheap shot, it ain't fun.

I mostly like single player but every now and again I like multiplayer. However, I do not like it when you can't play multiplayer without going online. I had Dead Rising 2 pre-ordered for months and then when I got it I realized I could only play multiplayer on Xbox Live. Thus my fiancée and I could not play it together since we only have one 360.

I prefer multi-player under the most extreme circumstances, so I voted single player since that's what I mainly play.

in most games I prefer single player. Mostly because I have these really long and intricate strategies and most people on multiplayer don't care about strategy or teamwork. Playing with friends is different though. Because we actually work together.
Usually more awesome things happen in single player, I.e. that sniper mission in cod 4.

Usually single-player, but more because multi-player isn't usually done in a fashion I like than because I hate people... not that it isn't at least partly related.

Single player all the way. Multiplayer can rot for all I care, especially when they put in multiplayer trophies/achievements. Odds are that you're going to get overwhelmingly single player on this site, as the "majority" of people who would vote for multiplayer would be terrified to show their face on this site.

Most of the time, I play single player mode. A good chunk of my friends are non-gamers, so having a chance to get together and play multi-player with a few like-minded people is a luxury for me.
