Try as I might (because I paid $40 for it), I can't get into Super Mario 3D Land. The move from point to point on the map is boring to me. I don't feel like I am exploring anything. It's a Mario game and exploring isn't really part of it but still I found it more fun to explore Isle Delfino or the Princess' Castle than just moving from point to point. From memory:

Games with mapped overworlds:
Super Mario 3
Super Mario World
New Super Mario Bros. DS
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario 3D Land

Games with overworlds open to a little exploration:
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy

So do you prefer the star/shine collectathons or the mapped overworlds?

I like all Mario games. But if I had to sit down and play a new one right now, I guess I'd prefer the star collecting ones, they seem to have the best replay value for me. As much as I always loved the NES games, I can play Super Mario Sunshine for a lot longer.

I've always preferred the hubworld setting. But then, I'm the sort of person who prefers the 3D Mario games to the 2D titles from a strict gameplay prospective, so take that as you will.

I like both honestly. Can't really think of which I prefer.

I like both, but I definitely prefer a world map setting.

Super mario bros. 3 is more or less my favourite game full stop.

The collectathons are pretty good too, I like the 3d super mario games as well as games like Banjo Kazooie (super collectathon) and Donkey Kong 64 (collectathon with retardedly frustrating minigames).

I really enjoy having a huge hubworld to explore when I'm not collecting things, but nothing can beat the awesomeness of Super Mario World's world map.

You know the more I think about it, I am just not motivated to get to the end of a level just for the sake of getting to the end of the level. With the collectathons you main goal was to get a star, not 3 coins but a SINGLE shiny star. The goal wasn't simply to get to the end.

i am a big fan of the mario games but the 2d ones tend to have better level design with more challenging compelling obstacles, and the 2d ones tend to have level maps so yeah.
