so fellow escapists i wanted to get your thoughts on this.
as the title implies : do you prefer to play as a male or female character whenever a game gives you the option to play as either ?
also please state the reason why do you choose to play as either gender ?
personally i like to play as a female character whenever a game gives me the option to do so.
examples being mass effect 2 where i chose to play as a female shepherd while most others were playing as male shepherd.
i really feel for gamers who didnt play as female shepherd coz it was awesome experience.
other examples being saints row the third where i played as a female , a hot one though..lol .
it really feels awesome to blow away bad guys with rifles, shotguns, missiles, grenedes etc playing as a female
and then in skyrim where am currently playing as a female nord named rose.
now let me explain why i choose to play as female character. its because its feels fresh to play someone who you are not ie am a male , so it feels different, exciting and more fun.
i feel more games must come out with female protoganists with good character depth .
so fellow escapists please respond what do you prefer to play as and why . thanks
also dont forget to cast your vote in the poll above !!!
edit : added additional option for those with no particular preference

Fuck that noise. I want to play as a Futa. We need to get that option into every RPG.

But if I dont have that, male. For immersion purposes.

Eh, I just alternate on a whim.

Never had any particular problem playing as a chick, nor did I ever feel any particular need to play as a guy.

Although in some games there's a specific reason for me to play as one or the other. For example, the better female voice acting in the Mass Effect games or the fact that male orcs in Skyrim look way more badass than their sisters.

Doesn't really matter to me. It all comes down to looks - if the males are better looking, then them, if not then a female. At the top of my head I remember DA2's FemHawke had horrible posture and was running reaaaally unnaturally, with her ass swinging from one side of the screen to the other. So I picked male.

I don't have a preference for immersion, since I don't really separate males and females in such a manner as to be completely and irrevocably different from one another.

I pick female about 75% of the time.
Obviously this comes from a repressed desire of wanting to be female in real life.

It actually depends on what the character is supposed to be. My Female Vanguard in the ME series is a gritty female marine style character to go in tandem with my Male soldier.

I place the "RP value" of the character above the stats of a character, which (imo) makes each character unique.

As a woman, I identify more with female characters and whenever given the option choose a female. Second playthroughs are usually done with a male character.

The only game where the opposite was the case is Mass Effect. I was quite, err, enamoured with male Shepards voice and looks. To this day, he stayed my canon Shepard. Fem!Shepard is an awesome character as well, but I just prefer Sheploo slightly more.

I play a female character 99% of the time.

I guess the reason why is because I like to trick men on the internet into thinking I'm a woman. I lead them on with my coquettish ways and flimsy outfits, and then at the penultimate moment, when they're driving out to meet me IRL for some mad gamer sex, I pull back the curtain and attempt to ensnare them into an act of unwitting homosexuality.

Seriously though I just prefer playing females. I dunno why. Better aesthetics?

male... simply because thats what I am, LOL.

But then again, I dont really care about roleplaying or anything, I just go with whatever the default looks and options are and press Start game.

As for playing characters that you dont create, I couldt care less too.

Or, to say it in another way, I rather want good/likeable/interesting characters, I couldt care less about their gender :)

Speaking as a male, I prefer to play (shocker!)as a man. I've tried to play female many a time but I just can't do it. Mass Effect, Skyrim, Fallout, Dragon Age, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, any game where I have a choice of gender I choose male. Its just immersion for me, I can't get immersed playing as a female as well as playing as a male.

Depends either on my mood, or the character that I imagine in my head. I don't have a default preference.

Male, because I am. If I have a choice, I usually always go with male (unless it is a game like Borderlands where the skills are specific to a character, and you don't get to pick the gender).

Female all the way. If i've got to stare at a characters arse for 20+ hours of gameplay then it might aswell be a sexy female arse than some burly bloke arse.

Your bang on the money with Mass Effect, it was more amusing playing as a women. The renegade options were awesome with a pale female shepherd with glowing red eyes...sinister.

Female.
Cause I am.
And because growing up the only games I had with a default female main character was my Tomb Raider collection.
So, given the choice, I will always pick female.

While I do alternate, it does depend on the game.

When playing games with a third person view, where you'll have little choice other than to stare at the PC's backside for the next umpteen hours, I'd go with a female character. Simply because I find that form more pleasing.

Depends on the voice acting/personality of the character.

In Fallouts and the other rare First Person games I play I tend to run as female as I don't think much of the male clothes.

My Shepard depended upon my playthrough, the Jennifer Hale pisses all over Mark Meer as a VA.

In fighting games I almost exclusively use female characters because their fighting styles are the ones I like the best, whereas most male characters are either clones of each other (half the cast of Street Fighter) or big and slow (Soul Calibur).

I generally play as my own gender and approximate physical appearance. I guess you could say that every character I've created in any game has been an expy of myself.

Arguably, if I were a girl, I would make girl characters. But I can't think of a good reason to play as a female character in any game if I am given a choice. I don't find pixel women attractive.
