Male character. Why? Because I'm a male. I don't play female characters because they aren't male which is the sex that I am. I only really tend to play chicks in games that simply have you playing female characters which is great.

I'm one of those people that has a problem with guys misrepresenting themselves as females in MMOs. What if I logged in drunk one night and decided I want to hit on some chick through the online game? That gets all confusing when you have no idea if want or not want.

But the MMO thing is not what I consider. I suppose after thinking about it real hard right now, I don't play chicks because I don't want to fall in love with my character because that would be kinda gay, knowhatimsayin'? I feel dumb and realize that I love it anytime the girl speaks or makes noises in that girly voice or I find a new piece of chest armor that accentuates the boobs better than the last piece.

I'm there to play the game dammit, not be distracted by the womenz. If the character is a woman by default, I can always tell myself I didn't have a choice and so I can't help if I'm distracted.

No, I never completed the witcher. I didn't advance in a timely fashion.

It depends on what character I have in mind. My most recent Fallout: NV character was female because I was playing straight NCR (made me feel icky) and I wanted to give Caesar and his Rome: TW rejects the biggest middle finger ever.

However, my most recent Saints Row character was male because I wanted Jason Statham.

EDIT: That poll must be wrong. I'm really the first one that voted no preference?

Generally male, being male myself it helps with immersion.

Occasionally female if it somehow feels right for the character concept I have in mind.

Im a guy so i tend to play guys.

Do play female characters/sides when im in the mood (ex: in 40k soulstorm i loved the sisters of battle playing style so mained them for a while and in league of legends my overall favorite character is kayle) but otherwise tend to stick to my gender to give me some relation to the character i play as.

Besides my best gaming buddy is a girl who usually picks female characters so not like there will be a lack of oestregen regardless of what i pick.

I have no preference most of the time, unless I think it's game that I could really get lost in. Then I usually like to play as a male character, simply because I'm male and as such I find them easier to relate to, I suppose. I'm certainly not opposed to playing as female characters though. It doesn't really bother me.

In games where I've got customisation options, I'll always try to make my character as much like my real self as possible. I find it the most immersive way for me to play.

I'm a man. I can't relate to lady parts. I mean.. how does all that even work? What am I, some sort of vagina wizard? My ability to relate to women can pretty much be summed up with this song:

And I hate that song, by the way. Seriously. None of that. Now don't get me wrong, I like women--love 'em to death. but I hate playing as them. All dainty and lady like... If I'm forced to, that's fine, but given the option, I always man up. And I name my characters manly things! Like Beef Cake and Meat Loaf!

I remember when I played Portal 2 with my lady friend, I wanted the blue guy. The short, stumpy one. Clearly that one's the man. Or the Costello, or Hardy... And by the way, when it comes to comedy teams, I'd pick the fat one, so even in THAT context it makes sense.

depends on how the type of game:
1. if the game has a evil/good system, the male will be lawful good while the female is chaotic evil
2. if its an RPG, I'll go female based on romance option, otherwise male
3. if its a fighting game I mostly use dude but I try to always have at least one female I'm good with, except in SSFIV where I main Juri :/
4. if its an MMO, all magic types are male all other classes are female
5. if its any other type of game, I'll go male... unless he's fugly!

For immersion purposes.
I'm not seeing the immersion here.
What?

I'm a guy. The character is a guy. Hence, immersion. What are you not understanding?

So you're saying that for immersion to be possible, the character you play has to be just like you? I mean, if it needs to have the same sexual equipment, I'm assuming you're choosing other similar features.

It depends a lot on the setting of the game, as well as my mood at the time of character creation.

I'm a hardcore fan of roleplaying in the sense that if a decision is to be made in-game, I like to take the time to think about what factors would play a role in the choices of my character. Gender tends to play a part.

For that reason, I like to vary the attributes of my characters as much as possible. Some strong, some slim, some young, some old. You get the idea.
But when gender choice is of a superficial nature, with no bearing on the game, I flip a coin.

No consistent preference on the two, except for circumstances.

> Online gaming or Pokemon? - Male

Reason? - If I make new friends I don't feel like needing to explain why I prefer to play as a different gender, since its a tiresome conversation that people seem keen to believe is deeper or more Freudian or more fascinatingly insightful than it actually is.
___

>Games with ridiculously skimpy high level female armour for player characters? - Male

Reason? - That's just lazy pandering fan service and a dull, by-the-book design choice. Its no more arousing than those holographic sticker pens with disappearing clothes. Plus I don't want to associate with those that live the horny jackass fratboy gamer stereotype.

Mostly though I plain won't play games like this though. They self select for people I don't care to associate with.
___

> Games with gender specific branching dialogue or quests in a few instances? - No consistent preference.

Reason? - I don't feel it is significant enough to really give it much thought, so I just choose on impulse. I played Mass Effect and ME 2 with a Femshep and replayed some of both with a male shep. Mostly I'll have lost interest in a game that doesn't put in more effort than that to immersive role-playing.
___

> Games or VNs with gender as a core mechanic? - Both genders, probably Male initially. Anything else feels like leaving the game unfinished.

Analogue: A Hate Story becomes features almost a character due to the cultural sexism one AI is programmed to treat you with. Not playing as both feels like not scratching the surface.

In single player 3rd-person games I play a female character since, as I'm going to be staring at an ass for the next 20+ hours, I'd rather that ass be female. In multiplayer games I play a male to avoid confusion.
In 1st-person games I usually choose the default option.

i'm a guy and i tend towards playing female characters. i dunno why exactly, but they tend to look better aesthetically. but then again, i guess guys would look better if you preferred the "built like a fridge" look

Generally male, because if the game has a story element it's most likely to be assuming the character is male. Mount & Blade is especially bad in this regard - if you use a female character you still end up being referred to as "he".

But it really depends on the game. Sometimes a lot of humour can be added by playing female. The headbutt scene in Mass Effect 2 cracks me up with a female Shepard.

Mostly male... but my current FemShep is badass.

I tend to pick characters of my own gender because I don't really stand how a lot of developers assume that men get the standard Realistic McBlandy walking cycle, where females get the Hip-Dislocating Porn Star Swagger - all so the player has something to look at.

A lot of Skyrim players will answer they'll pick a female character because they'll be looking at her for hundreds of hours. It might as well be a sexy chick rather than a boring dude, according to their logic.

I never could understand that logic, personally. I'd rather be immersed with a character I can at least partly project myself in, rather than one that keeps me second-guessing. Would any woman seriously do this or that? Aren't females supposed to be somewhat more sensible in their choices than males? If so, why did she agree to that drinking contest with Sam Guevenne/Sanguine?

Y'know, stuff like that.

Then you have players who take their female fetish way too far. Anime Hentai voice mods, bunny ears, weird hair colours, oversized eyes and a Buster Sword, plus occasional uses of breast mods because hey, bewbage - all in the context of a game that's trying to paint a picture of Fantasy Vikings and frozen wastes.

No. Just - no. If I'm pining for a sight of the female form, I'll head back to campus. Plenty of nice girls there.
