Pretty much, that.

I prefer the more often open nature of Western RPGs. Although certain values well spread through genres of fantasy - which is the genre many if not most RPGs belong to in some way, might annoy me, so are the value spread out in common Japanese games.

And in general, while I have absolutely nothing against a bishonen once in a while, certain artistic aspects of Japanese RPGs just annoy me. That is a generalization, sure, but you can't avoid generalizing when you're talking about such a wide-spread genre as either JRPG or WRPG.

So, meh.

ITT: JRPG fans explain why they like JRPGs, WRPG fans explain why they hate JRPGs.

"A western RPG involves role-playing. A Japanese RPG is a linear adventure game with numbers."
Fun fact, you're wrong. You're like a christian preacher explaining why science is bad after flunking high school biology.
Both Agarest War and Ar Tonolico have branching storylines, altering characters you team up with, and different endings (there are many more, but you can find those yourself).

Do all use "JRPG fans" a favor and stop trying to explain in witty one liners things you know nothing about.

All JRPG's have androgynous teenagers? They're all grind fests?

I know I'm really going against the flow of what people are saying, but I genuinely like JRPG's better. Most of them are stereotyped with FF, but a lot of times, they tend to have quite a few differences. Such as say, the already mentioned Mother/Earthbound or Pokemon.

Maybe I don't like creating my own story, maybe I'm more interested in sticking to the path I'm given rather than wandering around lost for hours, maybe I, I don't know, enjoy turn-based combat. I enjoy JRPGs and WRPGs just aren't as enjoyable to play for me.

For everyone who claims that their genre is better, it's an opinion, not a statement of fact.

I have to admit it's amusing how every topic devolves into that. WRPG fans just bashing the genre which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.
Yeah, and they need new material, maybe by playing a JRPG thats come out within the last 5 years. Or maybe they just don't find them fun, hell I know the JRPG formula isnt for everyone, but hell FF7 and what Yatzee says isnt an accurate talking point in a debate.

Its like the Tea Party movement...

But yeah both are fun, but I'll pick up a JRPG because thats where I get more enjoyment.

I'm one of the biggest RPG nerds you'll see. As long as the game doesn't suck, I'll enjoy it.

American RPGs have I few things I like:

Good lead characters or customizable characters so you don't have to listen to some wimpy tarts all day.

Guns, and the ability to possibly have Person Shooter in their genre discription

Less bright colors and normal hair cuts

Well, I agree with Bioware that JRPGs aren't really RPGs. WRPGs actually involve Role-Playing some of the time, where JRPGs almost never has any role-playing. For some reason it's become customary to slap on the title "RPG" on any game with a stats system. Role-playing games allow you to make decisions and play as if you were the character. The only decisions that you can ever make in JRPGs is to change the main character's name, and even then that's iffy.

That being said, I enjoy both very much but like WRPGs slightly more.

Damn...another person talking about Resonance of Fate.

I really need to stop putting this game off and just get it.
Don't. It's terrible, the combat system while unique is horribly done, it's difficulty relies entirely on false difficulty due to the system fucking you over ooorrr you can just not use the combat system and rely on the stupid as fuck hero moves like the game wants you to, which are the least fun things in the game.
Okay, goddamn it, see, this is why I keep putting it off.

I see one side saying it's one of the best things ever, then I see another side saying it sucks...arrrrghghghghgh!!!!

Fuck it! I'm just gonna stick with my books until Dead Rising 2 comes out. That's the only other thing this summer that looks good for PS3

Mostly western RPGs. I've nothing against JRPGs, but there are more WRPGs that I prefer, and I like their style more.

I like them both to be honest. They both have something unique while keeping what I love about the RPG genre as a whole.

Most JRPGs aren't role-playing games...they're just regular games. FFVII could skate by, because you could choose different conversation trees and it would actually affect the story. "JRPGs" like Kingdom Hearts, though, are just regular adventure games. I don't even know why some JRPGs are even given the title. Is it because it has a level-up stats system or something? I just don't get it.

... Is Kingdom Hearts even CLASSIFIED as a JRPG?

A good RPG is a good RPG but as I get older I'm digging the more seriously toned western RPG's. If you would have asked me this a decade ago, it would have gone the other way.
