Just when i'm bored or really don't know what i'm doing, but then again today's manuals aren't particular useful...

Unless its something pre-Whatever generation we're on, because they actually had nice story related thing and what-not. Like when Pc games were mainly sold in disc format.

Depends on the game.

Generic FPS and sequels or other such games, never. I just know how to play them.

RTS, 4X and slightly different to normal FPS or other such I always will, as they'll either include an explanation of the systems in game that aren't in other games and that I'll need to know, or will have a list of units and buildings for each faction that I will learn and design strategies around.

I always do. I never assume standard controls, and the manuals may contain some background info...Slim chance, these days, but,I was raised on Super Mario World,Dungeon Keeper, and Crash Bandicoot.

I just got Kingdom Hearts 3DS today and almost cried when I saw the manual. It's fully colored and I think there is more relevant content within it than there is in some of the New 52 #1's (buh-ZING). I would have been happy if it was just a fully colored 6-page pamphlet but no...mind = blown.

rarely nowadays. Most games now have very good tutorials built in, no need to look unless its for clarification of combos etc.

Today? What manuals? :(
Pretty much that. I mean I surprised when I bought The Wither 2 for the the 360 that it actually came with both a manual and a mini strategy guide.

Back when they were good. I think the last decent manual I came across was the World of Warcraft one.

Now they're just one page of absolutely nothing useful.

When I was little, I'd read the hell out of any manual that came with my games. Most of them had backstory, character bios, pictures, ect.

Not to mention they smell nice.

...

Don't look at me like that, I'm not crazy I swear.

Now-a-days though, manuals just seem to be an afterthought. Not much is put into them. Hell, Arkham City's manual is practically nothing but advertisement for Batman related merchandise.
