Gamefly's reputation is quite high. What's the UK equivalent?I've googled, found some sites but don't trust them yet. I've always thought about renting, but Blockbusters is too expensive.

I buy 90% of my games second hand and only when they're £15 (28USD) or under, I got Fallout 3 for £8, Metal Gear 4 for £14, LBP for £10 =). Just look everywhere, very rarely buy in shops, such a rip off, rarely they have a good deal. I saw fallout 3 yesterday for £11 and that was on a special offer rofl, down from £18. I got my Fallout 3 in the summer, off ebay.

I rent every now and then when I feel like I want a new game to play to keep me occupied as I take a break from the games I own. If I get bored playing something like Starcraft or MW2 I can just go out and rent something random, like Skate 2 and have fun with that for a week until I can go back to the favorites I have been playing.

There is actually no shop round my Norwich area to rent from. (No Blockbuster or anything. Unless you count four year old games at the library) I'd imagine renting is like a bit of taboo now for achievement/trophy hunters; "Well this game sucks. No wait, where's that achievement from?! It's stuck on my profile FOREVER!!!"

Never. It's just like piracy to developers and creators. Really - there's no difference.

I used to, both through local video stores and Gamefly but then I quit playing videogames. However, with my recent Xbox360 purchase meaning I've missed out on quite a few years of games I'm thinking I'll start back renting a few titles I've wanted to try to see if they're worth picking up.

I buy everything I think looks good. The bad part is sometimes I'm wrong.
The other thing I got into for a while was Goozex. The trading system there works much better than Gamestop's, and its all online so I don't have to go anywhere.
I did think about trying out Gamefly though.

With a larger disposable income (and better sense) I actually buy a lot of my games. BUT if it's a game that I'm on the fence for, I'll either buy it used (if it's hella cheap) or rent to try it out. So renting is the option for when I want some more information, or I just try the game out at work, yay for working at a gaming centre!

I haven't seen PC games for rent since the old floppy shops back in the late 80's early 90's. These days I rent console games and if I enjoy them I buy their PC versions if avalible.

I used to buy a lot until I realized how much money I was losing by buying games and then selling them shortly after I beat them. I've been a Gamefly member for over 2 years now and have mainly used that for my games. Also, with their "Keep it" system, you can essentially get brand new games for $15+ off of retail. I occasionally rent at the local Hollywood video when I want something else to play now and don't want to wait for GF to ship it out. The only times I buy from other vendors typically is when there's a very compelling offer associated with it (Buy GH5 get GH:VH free, Buy Beatles: RB at Gamestop and get 3 free songs, etc)

Never pirated, never rented. If I'm unsure about a game, I will trawl through the internet for hours, gathering reviews and tit-bits of information until I can make an informed decision. If I am truly unsure, I will always try to borrow a copy from a friend. I think that though renting can tell you how good a game is, you can get the wrong impression from the beginning, (Brutal Legend demo, kinda like a rental in that you don't play that much of it.) Also, if you decide to get the game, you've already played through some of it, so the play-through for me is tarnished.

I hate renting games. You usually have to pay rather high amounts of money and more often than not you wouldn't progress that far into the game. Maybe i'd rent a fps but nothing else.

Right around the time Family Video started renting their games for only 5 days instead of the full week, I stopped renting games.

I rent games when I can't afford to buy them and to see if they're even worth buying.

EDIT: Also, if I can avoid it, I don't use reviews as my only source to determine if a game is good or not. I've learned the hard way that just because a game gets good reviews doesn't mean I'll like it. This means that I actually bought Oblivion and Street Fighter 4 solely based on the reviews they got. I didn't really like either of them. This is why it helps to know your taste in games, and if you're unsure, try before you buy.

Fuck yes. Well actually I only rented games once, which has shortly after I got my PS3. I rented a couple games. Thanks to that I want to buy Prototype. However I am also grateful that because I rented PS3 games I found out that console didn't interest me at all. Now I have my 360 again so I'm going to be renting games again soon so that I can try out games without wasting money on games I don't like enough to permanently own, and this way I can review multiple games without blowing so much money.

By the way, I use the 23$ a month gamepass from Blockbuster so I can get any game and keep it as long as I want and switch it for another unlimited times.

Used to rent NES games at the local video rental place.
The PC doesn't lend itself very well to the whole renting thing.
