I only know a little german and I learned it's best not to try to figure out Rammstein songs because some of them see the line and don't just cross it, they go speeding by it in a pink convertible with tits for headlights while drinking beer and banging.

I love translating Rammstein songs, especially for people who've never heard the translations before. Indeed, Rammstein is the reason for my eclectic, if not actually useful, German vocabulary. There's nothing quite like hearing my sister singing along to 'Zwitter' and causally mentioning that the song is about a Hermaphrodite.

What it shows to me is the huge cultural difference between the US and Europe, Europeans love sex and hate violence, Americans love violence and hate sex. It's why sure there's plenty of American songs about sex but very few go as dirty as Rammstein.

I'm sure it's just shock value. I don't think many European bands go as far as Rammstein do. It's mostly in their recent stuff that they've started getting so sexual- certainly their first two albums don't have nearly as much shocking content. The conclusion I would draw is that they're simply turning to more and more explicit material as a way of keeping themselves fresh.
It's still really fun to let a friend listen to, say, 'Ich tu dir weh' and then explain what the lyrics actually mean.

I was thinking of exactly that song, I sang it a few times then looked up what it meant and now I just keep it in german. I don't even think about what it means anymore.

It would be a pain the ass translating anything to shona. I barely speak it and because of it I've gotten severely rusty that I can barely understand a single word of any song in shona
