Nah, I'm too poor at the moment to be spending £40+ on a game, plus I'm so busy in term time that it actually works out better if I just wait until a holiday or two away for a game to drop a little in price.

I've bought a few on release day, but the games I'm really interested in that are coming out are generally from companies that are good to drop prices quickly or the games they put out are bugged to shit the first month (Seriously Bethesda, enough with that shit.) I find a little bit of patience usually gets me more games and less headache for my money.

Any game that I seriously want I pre-order and get on release date. The only time I ever buy a game otherwise is if I have nothing else to play and I feel like getting one.

Generally speaking I get sequels on release date and other games whenever I notice them. I don't often get excited for new IP's.

What do you mean "still"? I never did :)
Though preorder bonuses always try to taunt me away from my better judgement...

I always try to buy the game on release day, but most of the time lack of money or transportation prevent me from doing so. The upside sometimes by the time I do get to go and buy the price has dropped.

Only for Assassin's Creed. All of the others I use GamesTracker [http://www.gamestracker.com/] for.

I don't really buy many retail games anymore. But the last ones I've bought were all day 1 purchases.

Sonic Colours
Donkey Kong Country: Returns
Borderlands: GotY
Portal 2

I did until two weeks ago, Brink came out with. My expectations where so high and the game was so mediocre that I have decided from now on:
A) I download it for a test run and then buy it or not
B) read forums and wait a week
C) Wait until few game reviews came out.

50bucks is alot for a game and these days alot of games come out at the same time. I want to play them all, but only the best will be played again the next month

Some games that I know I'll be getting regardless and want immediately, such as Mortal Kombat or Diablo 3 (I really hope it launches this year) I'll get day one. Or the hard to get ones like Atlus games. Others that I'm thinking about getting but aren't guaranteed purchases I'll wait on, see what reviewers and the community are saying about them. And I almost never pre-order anymore unless there's a good reason to and I know I was going to pick it up on launch day anyway (like Diablo 3, I'll probably pre-order it just to guarantee getting a copy).

I bought Brink and The Witcher 2 on release and I didn't have any regrets at all.
Also I'm certain that I'm going to buy Guild Wars 2, Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 on the release.
Beware that bioware postponed ME3 after the attack of his own community to DA2. I'm not saying it is a bad game, as I still did not played it. I'm saying it's a bad omen on the game, as bioware itself was fearing that it would be another flop.

As for the day one release... I personally do so only if I'm 100% sure on what I'm buying. And this mean that there is only 3 company from who I don't rent the game [yes I preorder or rent a game]: Blizzard, Valve, Cd project RED, Bioweare [no! they betrayed me!]
Only exception may be deux ex revolution and batman arkantum city, BUT I'm really scared to buy these, as I personally don't know if I will like this games:
Deux ex is promising the hell of a great game, but I personally don't know if I should trust the trailer, I think I will rent/play a demo and then buy the game
Batman arkantum asylum is a remake of a game made by a company with the only idea of milking money from batman name. I was really surprised that the game was actually good. So don't really know...

Dragon Age 2, Portal 2, were the last day one games I bought, and I was perfectly satisfied with those. Most things I Gamefly, and if they're good enough, I'll buy them.

Depends on the game. But yes, long awaited titles I have no fear and much anticipation over, I buy them as soon as I can. Upcoming examples would be Battlefield 3, Skyrim and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Sometimes. If it's a game I really want, I'll get it as soon as it comes out (I did this with God Of War 3 and inFAMOUS). Regardless of what the reviewers are going to say, regardless of the buggy issues it might have, the game called to me, and I want it. So I get it. Done deal. Planning to do this for the upcoming inFAMOUS 2. Other than those special gems though, I wait for games to come down in price a bit before I buy them. And really, I only like a limited few games anyway (for example, I don't like shooters very much, so that cuts out about half of my options) so I don't ever feel like I'm spending too much or too often on games anyway.

I only bought 3 this year; Dragon Age 2, Portal 2, and L.A. Noire. And only one of those was a disappointment.
I'm curious. Because at first I figured that it must have been Dragon Age 2 you were disappointed with (cause it seemed like the entire world was), but I'm also hearing not-so-positive responses over L.A. Noire. Which one disappointed you?
