Talking literally for a bit, almost all games only have straight characters, while around 5-7% of people in the UK at least have had homosexual sex. This simply isn't reflected in games.
I would like to think that a game with a gay character could carry itself. Though from a marketing perspective, it's easier for the 95% of straight people in the market to relate to heterosexual relationships.

homosexuality in video games right away incurs a sort of immature humor from its audience. If the protagonist of a game was to be homosexual it would have to be done in a serious manner. A gay protagonist could work, if you use something like a pained past, or a dark backstory. But the writer could make the best and most dramatic character, it is up to the gaming public to take him (or her) seriously.
I certainly hope it could survive, if it hasn't already been made.

It really depends on how they handle it. If they follow stereotypes to make it very blatant that "this main character is a flamer!" then no, it would tank (unless it's a comedy game). If it was just a fact of their character, and they acted like a normal human being and not a stereotype, then sure.
