A humanoid figure would make sense. There is a reason we evolved into it- its incredibly effective.

Beyond that, probably no similarity.
Effective? At what?
At conquering the entire planet apparently.
I bet a race built like cougars who were just as intelligent could do just as well if not better than us.
A cougar does not have the physical capability to use tools. Any race that had enough intelligence to create a spear could defeat a race of cougars that had a human intellect.
Cougar people could develop their own version and make it a cougar spear since they're just as intelligent.

But they probably wouldn't need it since they have tactics in combat now, with much greater agility + the sharp teeth and speed that their cougarness provides.

Cmon, you know we'd have been screwed if Cougars could formulate plans.

.....I like the idea of cougar-people now.
As it is, a huge percentage of animals have the brain power required to realize that pointy objects kill things. However, the fact is, most do not have the ability to shape or use spears. While a race of cougar people would have better tactics than they do now, they would still most likely fall to spears which can be thrown or can be used to give whoever is using it incredible reach.
And the Cougars then use their human-intelligence to build shields.

It'd be us but with greater dexterity, agility, stamina, more fur, better vision, with claws and teeth thrown in.

Shit would be so over in the times when the spear was the pinnacle of technology. Nowadays.... guns may even the battlefield, but now Cougars have guns. :O
They could not fashion a shield. The lack the arm mobility or the strength in the opposable thumbs. For similar reasons, they would not have guns.
They wouldn't use human-designed shields or guns. That's what I was talking about this whole........ jeez, no more, fine, no intelligent species on-par with humans would design their own tools or weapons. Happy?

No, because that's not true. They would make ones that worked for them. Ones without the need for opposable thumbs.

Given the vast variety of environments that exist in the universe, I think it would be highly unlikely that intelligent beings from other planets would resemble us humans in anything but a few fundamental ways (Like being bipedal).

I believe an alien encounter will be with a species that is more bird-like then human. Feathers or not, similar structure.

No. The possibilities of having another species living on a different planet means that chances are they won't look anything like us. In fact, I think that should we ever find aliens, their motives and actions would be utterly incomprehensible to us.
Agreed. In my opinion if we ever encounter aliens they will be significantly more different from us than we are from ants.

There are certain laws that nature is probable to follow wherever life may develop. For example, for more complex life to survive in any environment, perception is vital. When life forms start getting larger, the oculus is an essentially guaranteed development. The placement of the eyes follows some laws as well. Two eyes in the front for very mobile scavengers (like us) and top predators like the big cats, two on either side or on stalks for prey species. Depth perception will always be better with two or more eyes in the front, and the field of vision narrower. The reverse is true when eyes are on the side.

So we can take for granted that whatever intelligent life we meet should abide these rules; additionally, their eyes will almost certainly be on a moveable head at the top of the body.

I would also go as far as to say that innovative scavengers are probably the *most* likely species to achieve the level of cognitive sophistication required for technological development, with predators behind them and prey species at the bottom.

Yeah, they could be like chicken headed horses with six arms and 12 fingers and believe that spreading a type of taco headed dog creature across the homes into every sentient life form homes to be a divine right on behalf of their super 6 penis 1/4 god emperor.

Just saying, its a big universe that we could assume is infinite. Lots of possibility than we can fathom. Hopefully I get to live long enough to see what life out in space to be like, and hopefully it isn't something thats pretty much just us but from a different planet.

All aliens will natutally evolve a body shape and form suited to their environment but I believe any sentient life similar to our own will also share our bipedal two arm two eyes at the front of the head layout as it is the most logical for a species such as humans.

Could look similar, could merely be vaguely reminiscent, could be something entirely non-humanoid.
It's pure guesswork.

Yeah, I don't see why they would be hideous and deformed creatures. They'll obviously be smarter than us thought considering they will most likely find us first.

Possible but unlikely. Humans evolved from a very specific set of evolutionary circumstances. More likely to be octopus-like or something.

Probably not, I mean we look this way 'cause our oxygen levels, environment and probably some other stuff that I'm not remembering right now and I highly doubt wether there are more planets exactly like us. I'm not denying extraterrestrial life because I think it would be plain ignorant to think that from all those millions of planets we would be the only one to have ever evolved this far.

Some, sure. But I doubt an alien filled planet have only one species. Some may look like us, some may look like dogs or cats, some may look like squid.

There are going to be a few key features that may remain similar: bipedal, with dextrous limbs and digits, but there's nothing to say that they'll look much like us. They could have scales, fur, or something entirely different again.
