I think it is generally rude to use a cell phone in public. I don't own one and get along fine, but most people act as though if they don't have their cell with them every second of every day and they are not constantly texting or claling that they will whither and die.

I constantly have to chase my employees off the floor with cell phones and have had to start disciplinary procedures in some cases to help people understand how serious this can be. (ie attention not on what you are being paid to pay attention to, safety risks etc)

They ask you to turn you cell phones off for a reason in most theaters. If you're too stupid or too unwilling I don't want to know you, and if you're too busy, why are you watching a movie?
This.

YEEEEEEEES! Its rude. There are few things that really get me going right off the bat, this is one of them. If you're not watching the movie dont go to the cinema!!!! Aah....I get raging even thinking about it...its almost as bad as yapping away througout the movie. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........people............

My thoughts exactly, talk about a waste of money like, going to the cinema and spending the time looking at your phone...seems kind of pointless

Yes, mainly because a smartphone's big-ass screen is just a pain in the ass. By all means do it if you can dim your screen, but I don't want a bloody flashlight in my face when I'm trying to watch a movie. It's hard enough to focus on not reading the stupid subtitles. If you want to text so bad, why on earth did you go the theaters anyway?

i get dragged along to movies often enough(thank you peer pressure) and if the movie really sucks i take out my DS, set the brightness low and just play.

Yes it is rude. Even with no sound there's still that bloody annoying light that ruins the experience.

I remember once, me and a couple of friends were going to see 'Gran Torino' (y'know, with Clint Eastwood?), and during the climax of the movie one of my friends started to text someone. Proper threw me off the awesome part of the movie, and I ended up being pissed at him for a week or so... >_>

I will however say this though, texting is really rude, but not as rude as talking with a normal voice, about something completely different and ignoring the movie all together. That happened once while I was at the movies with my date watching 'Unstoppable'. It was f**ckin' annoying, thank christ they only spent 5 minutes in the cinema before being tossed out...

Phones are annoying everywhere. They're even more annoying in a space that's meant to be quiet.

If its on silent and you tilt the screen into your body so the lights not shining at every one, go nuts.

As long as it doesn't make noise, I don't care that much.
The bright screen can be a little distracting, but it isn't that big of a deal overall.
I think it depends on the mood you are in. In some instances little things like a bright light can be incredibly distracting (not because the light is annoying, but because you can't seem to ignore it, so the inability to ignore it becomes annoying). Frankly I think it is rude unless you are the furthest back in the theatre (because it only bothers people behind you).

long as they're not near me and not making noise I couldn't care less what people are doing in the theater...

If they're sitting at the very back, do it quietly with iPhones so there's no tapping button noises, and if they are willing to have their thumbs severed if they're caught by the ushers.

...however, it's more than acceptable to do so if it's a Transformers movie or something.
