No, a Creeper that blows up my mine, or a Zombie that hits me in the back is just annoying, definetly not scary

No, it's not scary. It can be startling when a creeper falls in front of you and blows up, but not really scary. I have never been truly afraid of anything in Minecraft. Look, if there's a dark passage in a game and I don't feel nervous about running down it, then that game isn't scary. I'm one of the most easily scared people on earth, and yet I don't find this scxary. I don't get how so many people do find it scary. It's kind of pathetic.

yes it is you are working on something them night begins to fall you run to your house hoping you can make it them you seal the exit and you wait for day to come as you hear the moans of monsters wanting to tear you to pieces, silent, alone, only a fire place crackling the night away, you look out of you window and all you see is the darkness. death. and doom.
You're going to love it when Zombie Rush gets implemented... on nights with a red moon, a million zombies spawn and have the ability to break walls.
Oh sweet Jesus... Are you freaking serious!? *Sobs*

I feel that the popularity of obsidian castle/Fort/Tower/Secret doom fortress will rise and that the mining of diamonds will be even more important. Or, you could just build your house in the middle of a flat space and make it float three block high. They won't reach you.

I feel we will start dreading nights even more.

What would be fun is siege mode where all creatures (including cows, pigs and chickens!) will bring siege weapons to bring down the castle in the sky.
Weapons include egg-trebuchets that will spawn chickens as the eggs hit inside the castle (like an animal version of paratroopers)

This mode will be really fun in MP.
(arrows shooting everywhere, etc.)

Is this for real? Would be quite awesome actually, and give a real reason to build utterly impregnable fortresses surrounded by death traps. God knows I already feel less safe now tha spiders can climb walls.

OT: Yes, it is. I have some huge sprawling caverns directly underneath my main base and venturing down there in search of diamond or obsidian is extremely tense. Particularly since the damn place seems entirely populated by ninja zombies who leap on me from somewhere up above and either flat out murder me or push me into lava.

Sounds fun.
At least it keeps you on your toes.

If it was a MP server that should be the punishment zone where the condemned are sent into the lower areas to die.

My base is two towers coming out of the ground with a hole leading to the very bottom of the map. I found a cave that is ridiculously easy to get lost in even with all the torches around.

I'm getting more scared in Minecraft than in most horror games. I was once mining when I found a cave. I was diggin from beneath into the cave. I tried to look around but there were some stones above me, so I couldn't see everything. I waited but I didn't see or hear anything. I went into the cave when suddenly a creeper fell on top of me and blew me to pieces. It scared the shit out of me. I was fully immersed in the game and it came so suddenly and surprising.
It was more than just me getting startled. It's that atmosphere in the game, where I'm mining deep down all alone and hear the noises from zombies and spiders but I don't know where they come from. I'm always scared when I'm in a big cave system and hear the mobs but I can't see them. I always move very slowly with a lot of torches with me while my heart is beating really fast.
I guess imagination and immersion are two wonderful things.

I think Minecraft is damn scary. I tense up anytime I hear zombie growls coming through the walls. I've yelped a few times as well, when baddies surprise me.

You just made that up I hope ?
Thats it, I am building my home in the middle of the sea, deep water where creepers and zombies cant spawn. Or maybe just make some floating home.
Nope, I read about it on the Minecraft forums somewhere.

Also, Notch added squid already, who knows what other kinds of water mobs he'll add?

How about putting various blocks in places to give pointers, if you got lost you could go back and looks for the unusual blocks (wool or something)

I have lit up my entire peninsula with torches and closed it off from the rest of the landmass with a flaming wall of netherrack to make my house/spawn point mob proof. Tho I might have to re do it when torches start to go out. I may just light it up with more flaming netherrack. As for the zombie rush my house is built floating in the air so all i should have to do it destroy the stairs leading up to it and i should be safe unless they learn how to build...
I heard rumors that all equipped torches will be turned into lantern, but not the one in your inventory though.

I don't think the game is intended to be scary - everything that scares you in Minecraft is a result of its darkness and isolation. You are alone, and however much you light up passages and lock yourself up at night, nobody will ever be there to watch your back... and enemies can get absolutely anywhere if you're careless enough.

The atmosphere varies. Sometimes, if it's underground, claustrophobic and dark, and you're running out of torches and hear some really, really creepy sounds, then yes, it has the potential to be scary. But mostly, the actual scares come from surprise attacks from skeletons or creepers. And once you get used to the noises, they cease to be creepy.

Basically, the game can be scary, but it's not the main theme.

I've not played the game, so I can't find it scary from experience, but I still think it's scary in a way.

Minecraft makes me think of people obsessively sculpting a mountain out of mashed potato.

Getting lost while exploring, I mean *really* lost deep underground far away from anything and running low on supplies can induce a feeling of panic and desperation, and fear too I guess. And when a monster spawns somewhere underground near your base, and you can hear the bugger and not find it can get a bit nerve-wracking. I remember digging up half a mountain to find a spider that had been hissing away for hours...damn thing wish I'd done something worse than just silence it with some arrows...
