I'd be disappointed if he did. People have made movies where the protagonist doesn't speak before, so Half Life can't come with excuses!
Yes, back when films were all silent!
In a story-driven, rather than action-driven film, it would just be plain weird if the main character said nothing. I wouldn't expect him to say much, but the odd "Hi" or "OK" wouldn't be too out of place. Otherwise the film will make him look like he's deliberately being a total dick to the rest of the characters by ignoring them.
Hey, that's an idea! Make the Half Life film a silent film!

That way he can talk without us hearing him!
Would you still have the placards telling us what people are saying about 15 seconds after their mouths have stopped moving?
Something along the lines of:
"Curses. More of these antlion creatures. Be jolly careful, Gordon old chum. If you step on the sand, they'll attack"
*cuts to helpful resistance member stepping on sand*
"Good lord, it appears to be eating my scrotum."
I wouldn't want it any other way.

Not unless it was written and voiced by Ross Scott.
So it's doubtful, but a talented writer could pull it off so I'm not saying 'never'.

I think he should do what he did in HL2: Refuse to speak at THE WORST POSSIBLE TIMES, and every other time... "A man of few words, i see..."
Ha! Also if they made the Episode One "Zombine" scene.

"So a combine zombie...that's like a...a "zombine" right? Get it, Zombine...? Heh...ooookay..."

Best scene in history!

I would be made if they made a Half Life movie. Having him speak would be insult to injury by that point.

If there was a Half-Life movie it would probably be shit like almost all video game movies, so even being a big Half-Life fan I wouldn't care. I'd probably pirate the movie, watch it once and delete.

He couldn't be a mute though, silent protagonists don't really work in movies.

well if you have a protagonist that doesnt speak it works great for a video game but not for a movie. so he would have to speak
Haven't seen Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance then?

I don't think it would make much of a movie. The actual plot of Half Life isn't terribly good. It is well scripted and used nicely to keep the action going but as a movie I don't think it could work.

Gordon speaking wouldn't ruin it as much as someone voice acting a character whose speech you have only seen in text before.

What movies are you taking about? Are the Indie or Foreign films? or are they the mainstream Hollywood drivel we all know and love?

And if you mention the Jay & Silent Bob movies, you lose.
Valhalla Rising, comes to mind. That was a fucking wierd movie.

As long as it's a good movie which I seriously doubt will happen, I don't mind at all. I don't mean a pop corn film you just watch once either, I mean a good movie. Like District 9, that was decent enough to watch every now and again.

Silent protagonists are just meant to immerse you into the game.
The character is silent because YOU are that character and he won't say anything without your input.
Sadly, they never actually implement the means to give that input, so the characters never speak.

He's a human. The fact that he doesn't speak as it is is pretty rare. Except that he's a video game character, and like 50% of them are mutes for some reason. Hell, even the Borderlands characters talked a bit.

Well i don't think that we will because when he spoke in Doomsday arcade i didn't see any letterbombs. But i still think that there will be some fan rage it that does happen.

I just find myself wondering what kind of conversation he'd have with Link if they ever had the chance. Perhaps they all attend Mutes Anonymous or somesuch.
Hey dude, Link wasn't a mute. What do you call all those "Hyyaa's!" and "YAAHH's!!!!" ? but really, link wasnt a mute, we the player just never got to see his dialogue... for example, we approach random citizen #4... "Hey kid get outta my way---your name is link, you say?---well, link, you'd better go save that monkey we've been using as a minor character since A Link to The Past." They treat it like link talks, but we dont see what he actually said... I forgot what i was doing just now.... .... um.... HALF-LIFE RULES!!

Well to be honest, a half life movie just sounds like a bad idea anyway, seeing as it what it does so right can only be done in games: Player insertion via mute protagonist; Open ended enviornments that reward exploration and getting a sense of a larger world, information given as much as the player is willing to investigate; shooting things in the face with awesome controls.

These things don't translate to films.
